Aparte de su llamativo aspecto, Uluru, también conocido como "Ayers Rock", es mucho más que un monumento imperdible. Uluru representa un símbolo inimitable de vida y cultura, y un lugar de culto sagrado para los habitantes aborígenes de la región. Dada la larga y fascinante historia ligada a esta roca sagrada, el aura de misticismo y misterio que se aferra a Uluru no debería sorprender a nadie. No sólo la superficie escamosa de la roca cambia de color a lo largo del día -pasando de un violeta intenso con toques grises a un lila claro, a un rojo anaranjado ardiente durante el amanecer, y de su habitual dorado albaricoque a un naranja desvaído y a un rosa violáceo de ensueño al anochecer-, sino que Uluru, dicen, es una fuente inagotable de sucesos inexplicables y sucesos paranormales.

Aunque los nativos no han escatimado esfuerzos en subrayar la importancia espiritual y cultural de la roca para los aborígenes, sus ruegos a los visitantes para que la respeten han sido repetidamente ignorados.
