Ulises Bar narra la historia de un cantante con alma de travesti, una prostituta con alma de poeta y el mágico puerto de Valparaíso como telón de fondo. Simón Rocco, un joven músico injustamente inculpado de asesinato, recibe una amenaza de muerte y se ve obligado a travestirse para sobrevivir en Valparaíso, año 1939. Bajo el nombre de Emperatriz, consigue un puesto como cantante mujer en el Ulises Bar -el local más famoso del puerto-, de propiedad de quienes lo culpan equivocadamente y por motivos diversos. Para no ser descubierto, Simón se esfuerza por alcanzar una transformación perfecta. Sin embargo, la feminización traspasa de alguna forma a su psique. Esto le genera profundos conflictos de identidad y confusión, porque travestirse ya no es solamente un disfraz: le gusta actuar travestido. Y a pesar de su indiscutible preferencia por las mujeres, termina por posesionarse tanto de lo femenino, que siendo heterosexual descubre que es travesti. ¿Es posible un travestismo heterosexual? La creciente ambigüedad sexual de Simón se inmiscuye, complica y provoca fisuras, en su turbulenta historia de amor con Aída, la joven casada de clase alta, y en su relación con Marla, la prostituta-poeta, ese ser tan especial, que lo inquieta afectivamente y lo atrae. Pero el travestismo también se presta para hilarantes equívocos. Bruno Falcone, dueño del Ulises Bar, se enamora perdidamente de Emperatriz, lo mismo que Pièrre Valois, un francés avecindado en el puerto. Estos, más otros personajes únicos, se ven envueltos en una subtrama de corte policíaco, con toques de erotismo y mucho humor. A medida que avances en la lectura te sentirás un personaje más de esta historia. About the Author: Verónica Tagle de Rokha es seudónimo de Verónica Tagle Díaz (1949, Santiago de Chile). El segundo apellido lo tomó de su abuelo materno, el poeta Pablo de Rokha*. Nacida en una familia de intelectuales y artistas, estudió antropología en la Universidad de Chile y ejerció como consultora en Estudios de Impacto Ambiental y Participación Ciudadana, lo que contribuyó a acentuar su empatía natural y comprensión de la gente y su realidad. En la actualidad está dedicada a escribir su próxima novela. (*) Pablo de Rokha, Premio Nacional de Literatura, 1965. Chile.
