About the Book

When the British came to the country now known as Uganda, in real sense there was no Uganda as such. The land was a fragmented land under different authorities of tribes. Even within the tribes, the lands were administered by the chiefs with absolute authorities. With only few such as Bunyoro Kitara, Buganda and few others that came under the Kings and the chiefs were answerable to them. In Bunyoro the King was known as Omukama and in Buganda Kabaka. The first European to come to Uganda that eventually led Uganda to become under the British rule was J. H. Speke. Speke arrived in Acholi land in 1861. And in 1862, he left Acholi land and entered Buganda land. This marked the beginning of the British in the present Uganda. When the British found a fragmented land under different authorities. The first thing they had to do was to negotiate with the authorities concerned. After that they came with the name of this united country. And they came with the name Uganda which basically they took from Buganda. Uganda then became a protectorate. Though fragmented, but they found the ways that the people were being administered or ruled, advanced, that is why they said we are not colonizing you, but protecting you from any external aggression. And the British rule in Uganda started with the Military Administrators to show the people that the meant what they said in the negotiation, we are bringing the military brass to protect you. Nor did the local know that these military brass was there to consolidate the British rule and to squarely deal with any uprising. So the first Military Administrator was Federick John Dealtry Lugard. He was administrator of Uganda from 1890 to 1892.As a Military Administrator surely he had to send periodicals reports and briefs to his bosses in London. I assume his reports and briefs were convincing to allow the British Authorities to change from Military Administrators to Commissioners. So his replacement came as a Commissioner, much more civilian in tone and well fitting for the locals. And after the Commissioners, the British changed to Governors and after Governors to Governor General and this was the last of the British Administrators in Uganda. However, ending their rule in Uganda did not come on a silver plate, it had to be politically fought. And with the wind of change or Independence blowing into Africa, and with few countries in Africa having already attained their Independence, Ugandans felt energized and began to work hard and push for Independence. And this resulted into organizing the Lancaster Constitutional Conference and Elections for Internal Interim Self Rule.In 1961 Internal Interim Self Rule Elections were held and Benedicto Kiwanuka of the Democratic Party won the elections with 44 seats in Parliament and became First Chief Minister and Apollo Milton Obote became leader of opposition.Lancaster Constitutional Conference was on September 18, 1961. This was to pave the way for Uganda to become Independent. Different stakeholders attended that Conference. In 1962 Independence General Elections were held and Uganda Peoples Congress won the elections with 37 seats. But that alone would not allow UPC to form a government and so it struck an alliance with KY or Kabaka Yeka of Sir Edward Mutesa, the Kabaka of Buganda. The alliance allowed Obote to form a government and he became Executive Prime Minister. In 1963, he nominated Kabaka Mutesa for the post of President of Uganda. The votes were conducted in Parliament and Mutesa was voted in hence became the President of Uganda. In the later years, the two fell apart because of the lost counties. This resulted in what is known as Mengo Rebellion. Consequently Kabaka was toppled by Obote his palace was overran by the army and he fled to Britain where he died later on.In 1971 Dr. Apollo Milton Obote was overthrown in a Military Coup by Iddi Amin while attending Commonwealth Summit in Singapore. In 1979 Gen. Amin fell.
