Es bien probable que muchos lectores habituales de poesía se hayan percatado del papel esencial que, hoy en día, posee el título en la construcción del sentido del poema, un fenómeno relativamente reciente en la historia de la literatura iberoamericana, puesto que, hasta el siglo XIX, la mayor parte de los títulos había asumido habitualmente o bien una de estas cuatro formas, o bien una combinación de varias de ellas: un número ("XII"), el primer verso de la composición ("A un olmo seco"), el nombre de la forma métrica empleada ("Égloga", "Soneto"), o el tema general del texto ("El bufón").

Los estudios de este volumen son el resultado del Congreso internacional sobre el título del poema celebrado en la Universidad de Zúrich del 22 al 24 de mayo de 2018, y están a cargo de renombrados especialistas que se adentran, con rigor, en este campo hasta el momento escasamente explorado por la crítica, ahondando en la obra de poetas canónicos de toda Iberoamérica: desde la lírica galaico-portuguesa a Pablo García Casado, pasando por Camoes, Antonio Machado, Pablo Neruda, Nicanor Parra, Octavio Paz, Alí Chumacero, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Aresti, Jaime Gil de Biedma, Claribel Alegría, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Luis Alberto de Cuenca y un largo etcétera. Los trabajos centran su esfuerzo en indagar los efectos del título sobre el cuerpo del poema, pero también algunas de sus variedades más conocidas (por ejemplo, los títulos "Ars poética" o "Sin título"), evidenciando la sorprendente evolución que experimenta este peritexto desde principios del siglo XX.
