About the Book

In a world where Covid-19 vaccinations and the history of fertilizer seem to coincide, Joanna Dyson Jakubcin succeeds in bringing a group of unique poems to life with brilliant fecundity. Her innovative characterizations of local Central Florida experiences will captivate the reader, including many descriptions of bird life, with personifications of the kingfisher in a local park and two owls having a pep talk.

In this 2022 collection of poems, Joanna's 9th book has invented an unusual poetic voice with modern scientific references blended into a sound reminiscent of Tolkien. Several new unpublished poems written between 2018 and 2021, as well as some previous favorites are presented in this book. Her 8th book published mid-pandemic in 2020 was entitled "The Nervous Dragonfly," and included many poems written from 2016 through 2020.

In the 7th book of her writing efforts, Joanna ventured into the non-fiction biography genre. Her careful retelling of a Czech refugee's true story offers adventure and inspiring themes for all who have struggled to overcome obstacles. In the "Biography of Hans Unden," Joanna explores the feeling of growing up in the post-war era of Germany, circa 1940's and 1950's. Hans' journey as a blooming chef-in-training takes him to Switzerland, London, New Orleans, and eventually to Florida. His positive attitude and tenacity allow him to achieve worldwide fame as an executive chef, despite his humble beginnings. Joanna wrote this book with guidance from Hans over a one year period during 2019.

In the 6th book of her writing career JD Jakubcin created several masterpieces in the post-modern folk poetry genre. Her blend of mythology and realism represents a unique approach. The 36 poems in her previous "Silver Cormorant" collection included a majority of unpublished material through 2018. Surprises and ironies abound in this poetry collection, including two satirical pieces for Valentine's Day and yet the January and August poems bloom with sentimental romance.

Joanna's other books include the "Journal Flies Overboard " written under the pen name Joan Ruth. "The Adventures of Dysingli Soon" was an imaginative action adventure story written by Joanna in 2012 as a historical fiction set in 13th century Ukraine. A few years ago, Joanna published an unusual group of poems entitled "Not Ready for Winter Springs." This book included a compendium of her original works from 2010 through 2015. She produced three colorful poetry calendars from 2015 to 2017 which enjoyed success at community events and art shows in the Central Florida region. The calendars featured her own photos of the local Florida scenery in her poems, such as "July at Lake Jessup."

In the past few years Joanna has achieved some success in vocal performance of her original songs, converted from her poems. "The Honeysuckle Moon of March," "August is Vermilion," "The Red Silk Ladder," and "Butter and Baby Blue" poems from her previous books were performed and recorded in the pop-folk-world music genre, featuring Dave Nachmanoff on guitar (formerly of the Al Stewart band.) In 2016 she recorded three songs with members of the Europa Band; one Bluegrass, one Rock and one Latin Samba song featuring Adam Milan Dvorecky on drums and John Kolbrich on the Roland accordion. She arranged and composed the music and wrote the lyrics to all of these songs, originally as poems, then performed the vocals for recording also. Her songs derived from her original poems can also be located at Amazon Music, Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, and ITunes.

Joanna currently resides in the area near Orlando, Florida. Joanna was born in England and grew up in Loveland, Ohio near Cincinnati. During the various Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020-2021, she worked on medical transcriptions from home in the new field of telemedicine. She graduated from Ursuline Academy and Indiana University.
