Es sind Serien wie Lost, 24, Battlestar Galactica, Alias oder Enterprise, deren Erfolg nicht nur auf dem größeren Budget allein beruhen kann. Diese Serien sind der aktuelle Zwischenstand einer Entwicklung, die durch Serien wie Twin Peaks, X-Files oder Star Trek wesentlich vorangetrieben wurde. Sie unterscheiden sich wesentlich in Bildästhetik, Dramaturgie und Charakterensemble von konventionellen Serientypen wie der Series mit ihrer abgeschlossenen Episodenhandlung, der Serial mit ihrer miteinander verbundenen Handlungssträngen oder dem Endlosmodell der Soap Opera. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Serie Lost als Beispiel dieser Megamovies, stellt die wesentlichen Unterscheidungsmerkmale heraus und vergleicht sie mit konventionell erzählten Serien u.a. in Dramaturgie, Bildästhetik, Genre, Figuren und Handlungssträngen. Vertreter der konventionellen Serien sind C.S.I. New York als Series, Gilmore Girls als Serial und Dallas als Beispiel der Prime Time Soap. Die Arbeit bezieht aktuelle Produktionsentwicklungen in den USA mit ein. Ebenso wird auf Ähnlichkeiten zu der Entwicklung des postmodernen Films im Kino hingewiesen.
