Der spekulativ aufgeblähte Immobilienmarkt der USA führte nach seinem Platzen zu hohen Kreditausfällen und enormen Abschreibungen der spekulativen Anlagen. In einer Art Kettenreaktion wurde aus der Finanzmarktkrise eine Liquiditätskrise, die rasch nach Europa übergriff. Obwohl die Leitzinsen durch die Zentralbanken stark gesenkt wurden, funktionierte der Interbanken-Kreditverkehr nicht. Banken liehen sich dringend benötigtes Kapital nicht mehr. Das Vertrauen in die Märkte war erloschen. Aus der anfänglichen Immobilienkrise wurde eine Bankenkrise. Seither ist das öffentliche Interesse an den Tätigkeiten und Geschäftspraktiken der Banken rasant gestiegen. Während der Krise mussten einige große - too big to fail - Banken mit Hilfe von Staatsgeldern vor der Insolvenz gerettet werden, da sie als systemrelevant erachtet wurden. Vor allem Investment Banken rückten dabei in den Fokus. Folglich wurden in jüngster Vergangenheit Vorschläge zur Umstrukturierung des vorherrschenden Bankensystems ausgearbeitet. So sollen in Zukunft vor allem Investment Banken von den klassischen Geschäftsbanken abgetrennt werden und keiner staatlichen Haftung mehr unterliegen. Um das Vertrauen in die Finanzmärkte zurückzugewinnen wird besonders der Schutz von Spareinlagen vor den riskanten Bankgeschäften akzentuiert. Die vorliegende Arbeit schließt sich dieser Debatte an und analysiert verschiedene Vorschläge, die sich vorrangig dem sogenannten Trennbankensystem annähern.
