At the start, Jim Hawkins is living with his mother and father at their inn, the Admiral Benbow. His life was quite normal until an old sailor named Billy Bones comes to lodge at the inn.

While Bones was staying at the inn, a couple of old acquaintances came and confronted him. One engaged in a violent fight with him, another went to hand him "the black spot". Shortly after, Jim´s father dies from sickness and Bones suffers a stroke and also greets death. The inn was attacked by one of Bones; old acquaintance but Jim and his mother manage to save themselves while taking a packet of papers from Billy Bones sea chest.
He decided to bring and show the papers to Doctor Livesey and Squire Trelawney. Turns out, the packet of papers Jim and his mother took contains a map of an island on which the infamous pirate Captain Flint hid his treasure. Squire Trelawney offers to put up the money for a sailing voyage to the island shown on the map. He hires a ship and assembles a crew. Jim gets to go, too, as a cabin boy.
Thus, his quest as a young pirate begins.
