"Tre operai" del 1934 di Carlo Bernari è considerato l'opera che fonda il neorealismo attraverso le schermaglie sentimentali di Teodoro, Marco e Anna, giovani lavoranti in una lavanderia protagonisti di un amore tragico sullo sfondo delle lotte degli operai del sud Italia. Una storia in cui la drammatica situazione del Meridione e del proletariato nel primo ventennio del '900 partorisce un popolo che non riesce ad acquisire un'autentica coscienza di classe ma si perde nella vana aspirazione di riuscire ad accomodarsi nel mondo piccolo-borghese. Il quadro è dunque di una generazione di scontenti e di sconfittidestinata ad arrendersi alla delusione per poi sfociare nel fascismo. Il romanzo d'esordio di Bernari, pubblicato nel 1934 ma scritto a soli 19 anni tra il 1929 e il 1932, si rivela anticipatore e ancora all'avanguardia della letteratura italiana del secondo '900. La sua forte attualità riguarda sia il piano storico della cosiddetta "questione meridionale", ma si lega anche alla situazione drammatica della "questione giovanile", piaghe entrambe rimaste sempre irrisolte e forse irrisolvibili in Italia. Lo sfondo storico e ideologico generale del romanzo di Bernari è infatti la perdurante "crisi della sinistra", però "morettianamente" vissuta dai protagonisti sul piano individuale e sentimentale. In questo senso l'abilità di Bernari è quello di collegare la Grande Storia alla psicologia dei giovani personaggi che ne subiscono influssi e conseguenze. Ma al di là di questo aspetto "Tre operai" rivela tutta la sua importanza nella struttura narrativa che per la prima volta utilizza tecniche espressioniste e cinematografiche dando vita a quella nuova foma di scrittura propria del neorealismo.

Carlo Bernari è nato a Napoli nel 1909 da una famiglia di origine francese (il cognome è l'italianizzazione di Bernard) ed è morto a Roma nel 1992.Dimostra fin da piccolo una forte personalità a tredici anni viene espulso dall'istituto tecnico che frequenta con l'accusa di aver istigato i suoi compagni alla ribellione contro un insegnante. La sua formazione continua privatamente: Bernari si paga le lezioni con il salario che ottiene dal lavoro presso una sartoria. Viene a contatto con l'ambiente culturale napoletano - conosce, tra gli altri, Benedetto Croce - ma a causa di contrasti con la famiglia, si trasferisce a Roma, dove inizia la sua attività di redattore e dove col pittore Paolo Ricci e il filosofo Guglielmo Peirce fonda il movimento d'avanguardia UDA, Unione Distruttivisti Attivisti, il cui manifesto lanciato a Napoli nel 1929 segna una prima reazione contro l'influenza sugli intellettuali del clima "fascio-futurista". Durante un soggiorno parigino, conosce i maggiori scrittori dell'avanguardia francese - Bréton, Aragon, Éluard. La sua opera, ricordiamo "Speranzella" premio Viareggio 1950 fino al romanzo autobiografico "Il grande letto" finalista allo Strega nel 1988, attraversa e influenza l'intero '900 e imprime una svolta alla letteratura italiana della seconda metà del secolo fino ai nostri giorni.
