Travis is special
The best change in Alicia's life was the birth of her little brother, Travis. Although the doctors and specialists the child endured seeing on a regular basis all insisted that there was something wrong with him, that none of them could define, Alicia believed differently. To her Travis was a whole person, who was not lacking in anything. He did not speak or communicate, but that did not make him less of a person or a brother to Alicia. She spent most of her free time with him, perhaps because of the guilt that she felt.
As Travis grew Alicia knew that there was only one explanation for his impairment. She had drawn energy from him when he was in the most vulnerable state, still just cells forming into a human being. She had wounded him in a way that no doctor would ever be able to heal. Still, despite the heavy weight of responsibility she felt for Travis' condition, she found her brother to be nothing but a joy in her life, a mischievous joy at that. Unfortunately, because of her fear of what had happened to her brother, Alicia was holding back her abilities. Only Matthias noticed this, and though he attempted to summon the truth from her, Alicia guarded her darkest of secrets.
She worried that one day Travis would learn the truth, and the love she felt for him, the bond she felt with him, would not be strong enough to survive it. Just when things seem to be reaching a balance in her life, she finds Matthew becoming more and more obsessed with the past. He is constantly researching into the history of conjurers, and even further into the past. Alicia wants them to act like a normal couple, go out on dates, or just waste time staring into each other's eyes. As she watches her little brother growing it reminds her of how short life is. She is determined to get to enjoy some of her youth, before she grows completely out of it.
Predators & protection
In the middle of what she hopes will be a peaceful time, her grandfather Nicolas makes an unwelcome return. Along with him is a mysterious woman Rochelle, who has more of a history with Matthias than he is willing to admit. In the middle of it all Travis becomes the focus of everyone's attention. It is easy to see that the boy will become a conjurer; the only real question is who else would know of him, or already did?
Alicia is left in the role of protector again as she tries to fend off the interests of Matthias and Nicolas in Travis. She just wants her little brother to have a chance to be a child. Although Travis still is not communicating with his own mother, or the rest of his family, Alicia begins to believe that he is reaching out to her during her dreams. Hearing his voice for the first time is an amazing experience that she hopes will continue.
