Henry Greville, whose real name is Alice Marie Celeste Durand born Fleury, born October 12, 1842, in Paris, and died May 26, 1902 in Boulogne-Billancourt, is a French woman of letters. Henry Greville, de son vrai nom Alice Marie Celeste Durand nee Fleury, nee le 12 octobre 1842, a Paris, et morte le 26 mai 1902, a Boulogne-Billancourt, est une femme de lettres francaise. Les vaches s'arretaient devant la porte de leurs demeures, et, poussant des beuglements plaintifs, appelaient leurs compagnes retardataires avant de franchir le seuil de l'etable; pour peu que deux ou trois de ces lentes creatures se fussent reunies sur un point de la voie, le passage etait totalement obstrue par le reste du troupeau que hataient les bouviers armes de longs cornets au son strident, semblables a ces trompettes du jugement dernier qu'on voit dans les anciens tableaux. De temps a autre une centaine de moutons passaient sur les contre-allees, le long des maisons, courant comme pris de panique, se culbutant, roulant dans le fosse, puis s'arretaient sans motif et reprenaient leur course folle pour se precipiter, tete baissee, les uns sur les autres, sous la porte etroite et basse de leur bergerie. Les petits enfants couraient pieds nus et les excitaient de la voix; les chiens affaires, serieux, aboyaient a droite et a gauche; les bergers criaient a tue-tete, et parfois une vache pensive s'arretait au milieu de la route, la tete levee, aspirant l'air. Biographie Fille de Jean Fleury, ecrivain haguais et professeur a Paris, elle l'accompagne en Russie quand il devient lecteur en litterature francaise a l'universite imperiale de Saint-Petersbourg. Elle y etudie les langues et les sciences avant d'y epouser en 1857, Emile Durand, professeur de droit francais et amateur d'art. Elle commence a ecrire dans le Journal de Saint-Petersbourg, puis, de retour en France, en 1872, elle prend le nom de plume d'Henry Greville, en reference au village de ses parents. Elle ecrit des romans sur la societe russe et publie dans la Revue des Deux Mondes, le Figaro, la Nouvelle Revue, le Journal des debats, le Temps... Auteur prolifique, s'essayant au theatre comme aux nouvelles, a la poesie comme au roman, elle a ete a son epoque, un ecrivain a succes. Son manuel pour l'Instruction morale et civique pour les jeunes filles a ete reedite 28 fois entre 1882 et 1891. Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly lui consacre un chapitre de ses Bas bleus: C'est encore une femme, a ce qu'il parait, ce monsieur-la! La mascarade des pseudonymes continue... (...) Cette revenue du pays des neiges, a tout de suite perce la neige de l'indifference publique, si dure aux debutants. Elle est une perce-neige heureuse! Elle en a la purete... Elle a la purete de la plume, cette chose maintenant plus rare que le talent. Guy de Maupassant dit d'elle: De toutes les femmes de lettres de France, Mme Henry Greville est celle dont les livres atteignent le plus d'editions.
