Jahre bevor sich professionelle FotografInnen und Fotografie-AmateurInnen mit Digitalkameras von Canon, Leica, oder Nikon ausstatteten, als man Momente noch auf Film und Fotopapier und nicht auf SD-Karte festhielt, schossen hunderttausende AmateurfotografInnen ihre Bilder mit Kodak-Kameras. 2012 musste Kodak Insolvenz anmelden und ist heute auf dem Markt der Digitalfotografie nur noch ein unbedeutender Spieler. Stattdessen hat sich die Firma hauptsächlich auf die Produktion von Druckmaschinen und dazugehöriger Software spezialisiert. Zwar hatte Kodak-Techniker Steve Sasson 1975 den ersten Prototyp der Digitalkamera gebaut - und somit hält die Firma das Patent für diese Entwicklung - die Firmenleitung verkannte allerdings zu lange das wirtschaftliche Potential der neuen Technologie und ließ sich von Konkurrenten, die die Innovation nutzten und weiterentwickelten, überholen. Die Digitalkamera war nur der Letzte einer Reihe technischer Fortschritte auf dem Gebiet der Fotografie, die die Entwicklungsabteilung der Eastman Kodak Company seit Gründung der Firma 1889 für sich verbuchen konnte. Dabei orientieren sich die Bestrebungen der Kamerafirma stets am Grundgedanken des Kodak-Gründers George Eastman. Eastmans Ziel - ja sein Antrieb zur Firmengründung - war es am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gewesen, die Fotografie so zu vereinfachen, dass sie einem möglichst großen Publikum technisch und finanziell zugänglich gemacht werden konnte.
