El presente libro tiene como objetivo mostrar el lugar que ocupó del Libro del Apocalipsis (el último libro del Nuevo Testamento) en la mentalidad colectiva de la Nueva España del siglo XVI, actualizando las ideas milenaristas y las esperanzas mesiánicas que han resultado actuales en la época de la Reforma y Contrarreforma, pero al momento de la Conquista han recibido un significado nuevo. En el suelo novohispano el primer comentario al Libro del Apocalipsis fue compuesto por el beato Gregorio López (1542 - 1596), quien aplicó todos sus conocimientos amplios de la literatura clásica y paleocristiana y prefiguró algunos métodos de la interpretación del Apocalipsis que en lo sucesivo han gozado de popularidad en los estudios bíblicos.

Gregorio López ha establecido su propio modelo del providencialismo. En el marco del presente libro se propone reconstruir cuidadosamente las referencias indirectas y oblicuas a la historiografía romana clásica (las obras de Suetonio, Flavio Josefo, Aurelio Víctor, Eutropio, los autores de los Scriptores Historiae Augustae), a la historiografía cristiana (Rufino y Eusebio de Cesárea), a los libros sibilinos, a los conceptos tomados de la literatura de los alumbrados y a otras referencias que se amalgamaron en el tejido narrativo de Gregorio López, creando una obra que lleva muchos sentidos ocultos de carácter histórico, escatológico y místico.

El contenido del Libro del Apocalipsis fue usado por el ermitaño como material para rastrear la historia del Imperio Romano desde Nerón y las primeras persecuciones anticristianas hasta los tiempos de Constantino el Grande y el Primer Concilio Ecuménico. El papa Silvestre I aparece como una encarnación visible de un "ángel fuerte" quien tuviera que atar a Satanás por mil años. Así comenzó la época del milenio cristiano que se acabó en el siglo XIV por la incursión de los turcos otomanos y la derrota del Imperio Bizantino. Siguiendo la tradición etnohistórica del Renacimiento, López consideraba a los turcos otomanos como reencarnación de los pueblos bíblicos Gog y Magog, los enemigos de Israel, cuya invasión fue predicha por el profeta Ezequiel. Para un historiador empeñado en las investigaciones sobre el Apocalipsis, el Tratado de Gregorio López sirve de mucha utilidad, sobre todo porque él fue el primero quien puso el fundamento escritural para el mito guadalupano que posteriormente se desarrolló en las obras de los evangelistas guadalupanos, como lo fueron Miguel Sánchez y Lasso de la Vega. Los elementos simbólicos apocalípticos de la imagen de la Mujer vestida de Sol fueron usados para la representación iconográfica de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Sin embargo, Gregorio López todavía no elaboró los cánones interpretativos correspondientes, adhiriéndose la interpretación patrística más tradicional, pero ubicándola en un contexto histórico estcricto; según su intención, la imagen de la Virgen tuvo que reflejar un período establecido en las persecuciones anticristianas en Roma.
