About the Book

English Summary: Bartole de Sassoferrato (circa 1313-1357) is one of the greatest jurists of the Middle Ages. Author of a vast work, he wrote at the end of his life a set of three treaties, translated here for the first time in French, which all have as a common theme to consider the exercise of power in its practical as well as theoretical and legal dimensions. He thus dedicates his treatise on the Guelphs and Ghibellines to the question of political conflict and factional struggles in the Italian communal world; he scrutinizes forms of government and political regimes in the Treaty on the Government of the City, as an extension of the reflections of Aristotle or Gilles of Rome; with his treatise on the tyrant, he gives one of the main treatises that the Middle Ages has left us on tyrannical phenomenon. If the topics are varied, they are nevertheless traversed by a common obsession that haunts the rest of philosophers, jurists and theologians since antiquity, that of tyranny, in which all power is likely to tip over. Acute observer as an actor in public life, here Bartolus dissects the forms and conditions of this degeneration and carries an incisive look at the political changes affecting Italian society in the fourteenth century.
