About the Book

There are quite a litany of factors militating against the growth and liberty of the girl children in Nigeria, and unless we want to wallow in open-deceit and perpetual self-denial, I believe it is time we stood up with a collective resolve to pull down all the identify able barriers we can see around us as veritable start off point towards ensuring that Nigeria stands tall in the league of nations that are battling to eliminate all forms of gender bias and gender discrimination. Today's Nigeria must begin to condemn all forms of inhuman treatment against the girl child as intolerable and nationally unacceptable. The challenges facing the child today range from social, economic, emotional, psychological, cultural and religious. There is no gain-saying that the girl child in Nigeria is high disadvantaged in our society and one cannot over-stress the fact that the challenges she face in the quest for being relevant is fraught with several hurdles which in themselves had been mantled over time to inhibit her growth and progress. The very road she has been made to thread on as she transits from girl hood to womanhood is one that she has had to fight for, hard and rough, to assert her existence as part of humanity. If we consider the fact that many fathers still think that it is best to have a male child instead of a girls, simply because they want someone who will carry on the name of the family when they are gone in this age and time regardless of whether the boy would turn out to be a misfit and a big failure then we cannot but agree that some of these misplaced notions that we hang on to will not take us anywhere. If preparing to send the male child to school even when he is clearly a dullard, and choosing to send the girl child to hawk on the street to raise money for her brother's education is not discriminatory, then one wonders what to call it. The sacrifices the girl is forced to make as a cleansing ritual to pave the way for a family's wellbeing is not only crude but wicked. There are several harmful cultural and traditional practices that still take place in many communities in Nigeria today and even across several other African countries that still pose as a big hindrance to the realization of her full potentials. A good number of women who suffer from very low-self-esteem live so because of the very oppressive and humiliating experiences they were put through from childhood. Something that one finds as an irony of sort is that a great number of adults who engage in promoting some of these harmful challenges cannot be said to be ignorant of the futility of their actions but because of age-old cultural beliefs and traditional hangovers, they have simply refused to accept the fact that the girl child has equal rights to life and to living as well. It is very easy to deny the hypocrisy of our society when it comes to gender dichotomy but the very hard truth which we all know incidentally, is that these discriminatory tendencies occur every day, around us. The travails of the girl child is part of the reasons why there are so many inconsistence's in various sphere of life in Nigeria today. This is because she has had to go the extra mile and sometimes undertake to do the extraordinary before she is appreciated and respected. To those of them that are not very strong-willed the sheer weight of inferiority complex that she lives has turned out to be a very heavy burden and elixir that has continued to discourage her from moving beyond where she finds herself. From the homes, schools, church, workplace, mosque, market and social gatherings. The girl child is mostly singled out for Christians that sometimes thrive from the mundane to the very absurd
