English summary: For the first time, this anthology is dedicated to the early days of carrying chairs in Europe. It contains seven articles by international researchers who deal with the history of the introduction and establishment of these chairs in various European centers of power. Carrying chairs are fascinating objects that elude conventional categorizations in many ways. On the one hand, they can be assigned to the furniture area - at least in their simplest design - but on the other hand they are also a means of transport. In a simple, robust design, these chairs were inexpensive everyday vehicles in city traffic that could be rented for short distances. In precious furnishings, on the other hand, they were courtly showpieces, which eminently symbolized social differences of the civil society: representatives of the upper class were transported in their palaces or on the streets of the city by servants dressed in precious liveries, rose above the unclean ground and symbolically caught up with the common people. The focus of the contributions is the history of sedan chairs at the papal court, in Genoa, in the Spanish monarchy, at the viceroyal court of Naples, at the courts of the Austrian Habsburgs, at the Bavarian court and in France. German description: Erstmals widmet sich vorliegender Sammelband in eingehender Weise der Fruhzeit von Tragsesseln in Europa. Er beinhaltet sieben Aufsatze internationaler Forscherinnen und Forscher, die die Geschichte der Einfuhrung und Etablierung von Tragsesseln in verschiedenen europaischen Machtzentren behandeln. Tragsessel sind faszinierende Objekte, die sich in mancherlei Hinsicht herkommlichen Kategorisierungen entziehen. Einerseits lassen sie sich - zumindest in ihrer einfachsten Bauform - dem Bereich der Mobel zuordnen, andererseits handelt es sich dabei aber auch um Transportmittel. In schlichter, robuster Ausfuhrung waren Tragsessel kostengunstige Alltagsvehikel im Stadtverkehr, die fur kurze Strecken gemietet werden konnten. In kostbarer Ausstattung waren sie hingegen hofische Prunkgegenstande, die in trefflicher Weise soziale Unterschiede der standischen Gesellschaft versinnbildlichten: Vertreter der Oberschicht liessen sich darin in ihren Palasten oder auf den Strassen der Stadt von in kostbare Livreen gekleideten Dienern transportieren, erhoben sich uber den unreinen Boden und entruckten sich damit auch symbolisch dem einfachen Volk. Im Fokus der Beitrage steht die Geschichte von Tragsesseln am papstlichen Hof, in Genua, in der spanischen Monarchie, am vizekoniglichen Hof Neapels, an den Hofen der osterreichischen Habsburger, am bayerischen Hof sowie in Frankreich.
