La historia que cuento en este libro refleja las circunstancias en que nació, creció, vivió y murió mi hermano Pompeyo que, en el momento de su muerte, contaba 21 años de edad, la misma de la mayoría de los 25 jóvenes que fallecieron trágicamente en ese accidente. Sea pues este libro una antorcha que mantenga con vida a esos seres queridos que mientras se les recuerde... vivirán. En anexo aparte adjunto la biografía de Algemiro Pérez Contreras, profesor del Colegio Santa Isabel de Huancayo, que falleció al lado de sus alumnos en la misma tragedia.
About the Author: Ricardo Calderón Gutiérrez nació y creció en Ocobamba (Apurímac, Perú). Se graduó de profesor de Lengua y Literatura (1971) y ejerció la educación en Ocobamba y Lima hasta que se trasladó a Miami (Estados Unidos) donde se desempeñó en diversos trabajos, entre ellos el de profesor en las escuelas públicas y privadas. En 1968 fundó y dirigió por tres años la Revista Llacctánchic (Nuestro Pueblo, reeditada en forma de libro en 2012). En 1970 organizó la Biblioteca Municipal de Ocobamba que lleva su nombre y descubrió la fecha de la creación política de su distrito e inició ese mismo año la celebración de su aniversario; por esto y otros servicios fue distinguido como el Hijo Predilecto de Ocobamba. En 1991 fundó en Miami el Instituto de Cultura Peruana a fin de promover la cultura de su país en Norteamérica, y desde entonces hasta la fecha ha organizado homenajes a veinticuatro escritores de la literatura clásica peruana (uno por año). Ha convocado exitosamente a 25 concursos a nivel internacional de poesía y narración, y ha publicado más de 30 antologías de autores latinoamericanos, además de las dos series: Raíces Ocobambinas y Nuevos Escritores Peruanos en Norteamérica. En el 2001 organizó el Primer Reencuentro de Ocobambinos Ausentes con miras de promover su distrito como un destino turístico. En diciembre del 2003 recaudó fondos para la construcción del nuevo local de la Biblioteca Nacional del Perú en San Borja, Lima. En el 2004 presentó en Lima sus libros en la Biblioteca Municipal de San Isidro. Acto que se repitió en Miraflores (2005), Chimbote (2006), Andahuaylas (2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014), Cusco (2010), Huacho (2012), Arequipa (2014), Bolivia y Nicaragua (2015), y en diferentes ocasiones en la Feria Internacional del Libro de Miami. Por todo ello el Consulado General del Perú en Miami le otorgó su Medalla de Honor en 1997 y el premio "Peruano del Año" en 2006. En 1999 recibió en Miami el Premio Tumi. El concejo de Miami-Dade lo distinguió con una Proclama en 2008; ese mismo año el Ministerio de Educación del Perú le otorgó el Chasqui de Oro. En el 2010 la Ciudad del Cusco lo proclamó Huésped Ilustre y le entregó la llave de la ciudad, entre otros reconocimientos. Desde el 2009 organiza anualmente el Festival de la Juventud para los estudiantes de Ocobamba. En 2016 inauguró su CASA MUSEO en Ocobamba, y actualmente trabaja en otros proyectos.
