Der Kern der Arbeit dreht sich um die Gegenüberstellung von kritischem Service Learning gegenüber der traditionellen Variante. Es geht um die Frage, wie soziales Engagement weiter gedacht werden muss, um von der traditionellen Variante, welche nur das Individuum fokussiert, zu einer kritischeren Variante des Service Learnings zu gelangen. Ist es gut, wenn Schüler/innen oder Student/innen die sozialen Ungleichheiten in der Gesellschaft durch Engagement bekämpfen? Oder zeigt sich hier nur das Versagen des Staates? Service Learning verbindet zwei Bereiche der Gesellschaft, welche ansonsten hauptsächlich parallel zueinander existieren, ohne sich dabei gegenseitig aktiv zu beeinflussen. Durch Service Learning wird diese Lücke geschlossen, da die beiden Komponenten Service und Lernen miteinander verbunden werden. Die Komponente Service steht hier für soziale Unterstützung, welche durch Lernende, egal ob Schüler/in oder Student/in, geleistet wird. Mit der Komponente des Lernens wird der Erwerb von (akademischem) Wissen beschrieben. Die Kernidee von Service Learning ist es, auf den Bedarf aus der eigenen Community beziehungsweise Gemeinde zu reagieren. Diese Verbindung von Theorie und Praxis setzt sich dabei deutlich von anderen Tätigkeiten mit Realitätsbezug ab. Im Falle eines Praktikums wird eine Verbindung zwischen der studierenden Person und der fachlichen Ebene geschaffen. Die Feldforschung verbindet die Bereiche der fachlichen Ebene, auf welcher geforscht wird, und die Gemeinde. Bei einer gemeinnützigen Tätigkeit tritt die studierende Person in Verbindung mit der Gemeinde. Einzig und allein durch Service Learning werden alle drei Bereiche - fachliche Ebene, die studierende Person und die Gemeind
