Mais les choses ne se déroulent pas du tout comme prévu. Les Dacoïts s'invitent à la fête... Et l'Ombre Jaune compte bien s'emparer du secret de Michel-Ange. Mais pour cela il a besoin de l'aide de son pire ennemi. Sur les traces d'une énigme millénaire, Bob Morane doit sauver la vie de son amie... Mais aussi empêcher que le terrible Monsieur Ming ne mette à exécution sa plus machiavélique machination !

Depuis ce jour où Bob Morane s'est réveillé chez lui, Quai Voltaire à Paris, pour y apprendre que son plus terrible ennemi, Monsieur Ming, alias l'Ombre Jaune, lui avait fait subir une 'duplication', il est obligé d'accepter son double sort: être une copie d'un Bob Morane original et se résoudre à revivre en plein milieu des années cinquante d'un univers parallèle qui, à son étonnement, est très proche de son univers d'origine. En réalité, il apprend de la bouche même de Tania Orloff, la nièce de l'Ombre Jaune, que ce dernier s'est lui-même dupliqué et que la Tania qui lui parle, est également la copie d'une Tania originale. Mais ce n'est pas tout. La nièce de Ming révèle aussi à Morane, que certains de ses amis proches, Bill Ballantine, Aristide Clairembart, Sophia Paramount, Frank Reeves, ont également subi la duplication. Dès lors, Bob Morane n'a qu'une idée en tête: retrouver ses amis dans ce monde des fifties le plus vite possible. Il réussira à rejoindre Bill en Ecosse, puis Aristide Clairembart, l'archéologue, au cours d'un périple dans la jungle guyanaise. Mais aujourd'hui, Bob Morane reste sans nouvelles de Frank et de Sophia. Il décide alors de rejoindre Bill Ballantine à Londres, et les deux hommes entament une enquête... Une enquête au cours de laquelle ils découvriront avec horreur que leur terrible ennemi, Ming, s'apprête à détruire la population de la ville. L'alerte sur Londres a sonné...

Naufragés du temps, en plein coeur des fifties, Bob Morane n'a d'autre choix que de s'adapter à sa nouvelle condition, et il lui faut gagner sa vie. Il décroche un poste de pilote pour une compagnie privée oeuvrant en Afrique-Occidentale française. A bord du bateau qui le ramène à Alger, Bob Morane fait la connaissance de Flore Maignan, une jeune et jolie archéologue qui a pour mission de rejoindre son père, entre le Tassili-N-Ajjer et le plateau du Djado. C'est tout naturellement que l'aventurier propose de l'accompagner sur les traces de mystérieuses peuplades dont les fresques témoignent de l'existence passée. Mais avec Bob Morane, rien ne se passe jamais comme prévu, c'est bien connu...
