Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Ethnologie / Volkskunde, Note: keine, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Veranstaltung: Proseminar: afrikanisch-asiatische Multikulturalität auf Madagaskar, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Durch die verschiedenen Einwanderungswellen ist die Bevölkerung und Kultur Madagaskars von asiatischen und afrikanischen Elementen geprägt, wobei es schwierig ist die einzelnen Einflussfaktoren zu trennen. Obwohl heute etwa ein Drittel der Bevölkerung Christen sind, spielt auf ganz Madagaskar die Ahnenverehrung immer noch eine wichtige Rolle. Diese Tradition spiegelt sich vor allem im Bezug zum Tod und bei Beerdigungen wieder. Der Tod wird allgemein als natürliche Folge schwerer Krankheit oder hohen Alters gesehen. Nur ein sehr plötzlicher Tod ist unnatürlich und es wird angenommen, dass er von einem bösen Feind, Zauberer oder Geist durch höhere Kräfte verursacht wurde. Vorstellungen von einem jüngsten Gericht, Fegefeuer oder Hölle existieren in der madagassischen Tradition nicht, die Toten halten sich stattdessen meist in der Nähe ihrer früheren Wohnungen auf (Schomerus-Gernböck 1992: 219). Sie können ihren lebenden Verwandten im Traum erscheinen um Gutes oder Böses zu bringen und gelten so als Mittler zwischen Gott und den Menschen. Bei Verletzungen bestimmter Tabus können sie die Betroffenen mit Krankheiten oder Missernten bestrafen. Um sie zu besänftigen und um für ihren Segen zu bitten ist es daher üblich, Zeremonien abzuhalten, bei denen den Ahnen Opfer, meist Tiere und Alkohol, dargebracht werden (Schomerus-Gernböck 1975: 805). Allgemein ist der Tod auf Madagaskar nicht mit Trauer verbunden, da er nicht als Ende gesehen wird, sondern lediglich als Wechsel von der Gemeinschaft der Lebenden in die Gemeinschaft der Ahnen (Roth 1994: 99).
