Erstdruck: Berlin, Erich Reiss Verlag, 1920 unter dem Titel Die Sonette auf Irene. Hier nach der Ausgabe: Totenklage, Wien, Phaidon, 1928. Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2020. Der Text dieser Ausgabe wurde behutsam an die neue deutsche Rechtschreibung angepasst. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Carlos Schwabe, Todestag, 1890. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 12 pt. Der chronisch lungenkranke Alfred Henschke nennt sich seit 1912 Klabund, zusammengesetzt aus Klabautermann und Vagabund. 1916 verleiht er seinem Pyseudonym die zusätzliche Bedeutung Wandlung und spielt damit auf seinen Sinneswandel zum Ersten Weltkrieg an. Er begegnet im Sanatorium in Davos der 20-jährigen Brunhilde Heberle aus Passau. Die schöne, sensible junge Frau nennt er nach ihrem zweiten Vornamen Irene, die Friedliebende. Wie viele seiner Zeitgenossen stand der selbst infolge seiner Tuberkulose ausgemusterte Klabund dem Krieg zunächst begeistert gegenüber. Irene, die Liebe seines Lebens, bringt ihn in kürzester Zeit zur Einsicht und der Kriegsgegner Klabund verfasst einen offenen Brief an Kaiser Wilhelm II. und fordert dessen Abdankung, was ihm ein Verfahren wegen Verrats und Majestätsbeleidigung einbringt. Am 8. Juni 1918 heiratet Klabund die schwangere Brunhilde Irene Heberle in Locarno. In einer von Euphorie getragenen Stimmung verfasst er die Passauer Distichen, beschwört Symbole der Hoffnung und der Dreieinigkeit. Wo der Flüsse drei sich ineinander ergießen, standen wir liebend gelehnt. Am 17. Oktober 1918 bringt die an Kehlkopftuberkulose erkrankte Brunhilde Heberle in einer Notoperation ihre Tochter Irene Fiete Anny zur Welt, zwei Monate zu früh.
