Wer bezweifelt, daß es Sinn hat, Geschichte in Epochen zu gliedern, und insbesondere bestreitet, daß sich das Selbstverständnis solcherart angenommener Epochen verbindlich bestimmen lasse, kann seinen Zweifel kaum besser begründen als durch den Hinweis auf die Vagheit der Bezeichnungen 'Humanismus', 'Renaissance', oder 'Barock'. Obwohl im Gebrauch und in Grenzen tauglich, die geistesgeschichtliche Entwicklung Europas im 15., 16. und 17. Jahrhundert zu beschreiben, blieben sie als 'Epochenbegriffe' unscharf - schon deshalb, weil die unter diesen Begriffen gemeinten geistigen Strömungen sich regional unterschiedlich artikulierten. Entsprechend verfügt die Forschung bislang zwar über eine Fülle von Einzelstudien, nicht aber über eine systematische Gesamtdarstellung der als 'Epoche' nicht faßlichen Epoche. Die vorliegende Studie will und kann dem nicht abhelfen. Sie nennt den Grund: Der Wissenschaftsbegriff eines Zeitalters, das den Begriff des Systems erst hervorbrachte, läßt sich nicht systematisch definieren. Gerade darum, weil in der hier zu beschreibenden Phase der Geschichte des Denkens erstmals die Möglichkeit entdeckt und erprobt wird, Wissenschaft nicht mehr nur als Form des Wissens, sondern als Technik zu begreifen, deren Beherrschung es erlaubt, den Bereich des Wissbaren systematisch zu erweitern, bildet das schließlich in der 'Scientia universalis' seinen höchsten Ausdruck findende Modell humanistischer und barocker Wissenschaft das erste Paradeigma neuzeitlicher Wissenschaft überhaupt. In der hier vorlegten Studie wird die Entstehung des Modells im Ausgang von den Konstituentien nachgezeichnet, in denen es vorbereitet wurde, ohne bereits vor Augen zu stehen. So wird von innen her erfaßt, was von außen nicht faßlich ist: das Selbstverständnis des Zeitalters der 'Topica universalis'.
About the Author: Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann (* 23. Juni 1946 in Olpe) ist ein deutscher Philosophiehistoriker und Hochschullehrer in Berlin. Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann studierte von 1966 bis 1974 Philosophie, Literaturwissenschaft, Geschichte und Theologie an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. 1974 beendete er sein Studium mit einer Dissertation zu "Maschine und Teufel. Jean Pauls Jugendsatiren nach ihrer Modellgeschichte". Von 1974 bis 1976 forschte er an der Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel zur frühen Neuzeit und zur Religionsphilosophie von Hermann Samuel Reimarus. Von 1976 bis 1979 war er Abteilungsleiter am dortigen Wissenschaftsprogramm. Als Assistent am Institut für Philosophie der Freien Universität Berlin habilitierte Schmidt-Biggemann 1981 mit einer Arbeit zu "Topica universalis. Eine Modellgeschichte humanistischer und barocker Wissenschaft". Seit 1989 ist Schmidt-Biggemann Professor für Philosophie an der Freien Universität Berlin. Schwerpunkte seiner Arbeit sind Religionsphilosophie, Geschichte der Philosophie und Philologie in der Frühen Neuzeit, Geschichtsphilosophie, Geschichte der Metaphysik und Geschichte der politischen Philosophie.
