Orlando, la sexta gran novela de Virginia Woolf, es una fantástica biografía histórica, que abarca casi 400 años en la vida de su protagonista. La novela fue concebida como una "fiesta del escritor" a partir de novelas más estructuradas y exigentes. Woolf no permitió que el tiempo ni el género limitaran su escritura. El protagonista, Orlando, solo tiene treinta y seis años y cambia de género de hombre a mujer. Esta pseudobiografía satiriza las biografías victorianas más tradicionales que enfatizan los hechos y la verdad en la vida de sus sujetos. Aunque Orlando pudo haber sido una sátira o una festividad, toca temas importantes de género, autoconocimiento y verdad con el estilo poético característico de Virginia Woolf.


★ Al faro
Al Faro se divide en tres secciones: "La ventana", "El tiempo pasa" y "El faro". Cada sección está fragmentada en contribuciones de flujo de conciencia de varios narradores.
"The Window" (traducida al español como La Ventana) se abre justo antes del comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial. El Sr. Ramsay y la Sra. Ramsay lleva a sus ocho hijos a su casa de verano en las Hébridas (un grupo de islas al oeste de Escocia). Al otro lado de la bahía de su casa se encuentra un gran faro. James Ramsay, de seis años, quiere desesperadamente ir al faro, y la Sra. Ramsay le dice que irán al día siguiente si el clima lo permite. James reacciona alegremente, pero el Sr. Ramsay le dice con frialdad que el clima parece estar mal. James está resentido con su padre y cree que le gusta ser cruel con James y sus hermanos.


Una habitación propia

Títulada en su versión original "A Room of Your Own" es quizás la obra más famosa de Virginia Woolf. Se trata de un famoso ensayo publicado en 1929 cuya tesis fundamental es: "Una mujer debe tener dinero y su propio cuarto para poder escribir una novela". Un clásico de la escritura y el género literario que hará las delicias tanto de los lectores masculinos como femeninos.


Antes y después de la afirmación de que las mujeres deberían tener dinero y una habitación propia para escribir una novela, quedan dudas sobre la verdadera naturaleza de las mujeres y la novela. Virginia Woolf aborda estas cuestiones en conferencias impartidas en 1928 en Cambridge. Un año después se publica este texto que recupera estas conferencias, pero atravesándolas por la ficción: Una obra que se consolidó a nivel internacional como su versión francesa, "Une chambre à moi" no se publica como un libro puramente de no ficción, ni como un ensayo, sino que Virginia Woolf crea un narrador de ficción (Mary Beton, Mary Seton...) y un espacio de ficción (Oxbridge, que combina Oxford y Cambridge) para acoger las conferencias, que se han incluido bajo el título "Mujeres y ficción".

Virginia Woolf, nombre original en su totalidad Adeline Virginia Stephen, (nacida el 25 de enero de 1882 en Londres, Inglaterra, fallecida el 28 de marzo de 1941 cerca de Rodmell, Sussex), escritora inglesa cuyas novelas, a través de sus enfoques narrativos no lineales, ejercieron una gran influencia sobre el género.

Si bien es mejor conocida por sus novelas, Woolf también escribió ensayos pioneros sobre teoría artística, historia literaria, escritura de mujeres y la política del poder. Una fina estilista, experimentó con varias formas de escritura biográfica, compuso breves ficciones pictóricas y envió a sus amigos y familiares toda una vida de cartas brillantes.
