Tom and Lovey: Pursuit of the Thunderbird is the sequel to Tom and Lovey: Under the Moon Into the Wood, a paranormal fantasy/horror story set in modern times. It begins when the two protagonists are drawn from the Midwest toward the Southwest by the same scent of acrid smoke forging the path of Tom's life since his parent's demise in the latter part of the 1800s.
Lovey is adjusting to the shed of more than twenty years, her deep emerald eyes and youthful body, along with evolving supernatural abilities. Her panther form emerges during an unexpected delay in Missouri as they solve the mystery of a ghostly long-dead missing boy, Farmer Bob.
They continue south to New Mexico, Tom revisiting events of the 1800s leading to the disappearance of his mentor Red Deer on his quest to hunt down the source of sorcery surrounding his lost granddaughter, Moon in Her Eyes, and her dead born twin. Tom recalls their encounters with the ghost boy Junior and faithful ugly mutt Spooky. Junior is sent to seek out LongTail, the mystical mountain beast miles long, while Red Deer enters the spirit coyote HollowEye, observing the deadly ritual in which the dead twin's spirit is renewed time and again as it claims and devours its innocent victims and their souls, evolving into a monstrous crow-like bird. His early search for his lost mentor had led him to a deadly encounter in the infamous Lincoln County jail. Periodic visits from his only love Margit's afterlife guide Tom in his quest.
The spirits of two victims, old Navajo blood brothers, point Tom and Lovey toward Chaco Canyon in the four corners region of the Southwest, where yet more secrets are revealed. After encounters with the devil woman the Thunderbird appears and transports the two back in time, before Tom's birth, all the while the devil witch playing her games of deceit and deception, luring them into a series of traps, away from her deadly path.
Realizing he cannot alter history, Tom returns to the present offering his immortality as a sacrificial lamb for her spirit to claim in yet another ritual, while Lovey witnesses his destruction and rebirth. Could the prescribed order of her ritual be broken?
