About the Book

After World War II, during which time she was forced to flee Europe, Lenka Reinerova returns to a Prague that no longer resembles the open and cosmopolitan city of her adolescence. Her political activism before the war, her years in exile, and her Jewish heritage allmake her a person of interestin the eyes ofthe paranoid authorities of the time, and this novel narrates the 15 months the author spent incarcerated in Prague between 1952 and 1953. The author describes her time in prison and the brutal interrogations she had to endure, memories of which also help to evoke many of her earlier memories.
About the Author: Lenka Reinerova was a Czech journalist and novelist, and she is considered to be the last German-language writer in Prague. When the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia during World War II, she fled to France where she spent a brief time in prison and then in the female camp of Rieucros. When she was allowed to leave the country, she passed by Marseilles and Casablanca before spending some time in Mexico. She returned to Europe whenthe war ended, but in the early 1950's she fell victim to the Stalinist purifications, spending more than a year inprison."
