Das kurze Leben König Heinrichs (VII) ist bekannt. 1211 Geburt, Vater Friedrich II. von Hohenstaufen, Mutter Constanze von Aragon. 1220 deutscher König. Erster Vormund Erzbischof Engelbert von Köln. 1225 Verheiratung Heinrichs (14 Jahre) mit Margarethe von Österreich (21 Jahre). Zur gleichen Zeit Ermordung des Erzbischofs Engelbert. 2. Vormund: Herzog Leopold von Bayern. Ab 1228 beginnt Heinrich (VII) selbständig zu agieren. Seine politischen Vorstellungen stehen allerdings im Widerspruch zur Politik seines Vaters und den Machtinteressen der deutschen Fürsten. 1231 wird ihm das Statutum in favorem principum abgepresst. Auf den Hoftagen von Aquilea und Ravenna muss er sich 1232 dem Vater auf demütigende Weise unterwerfen. Als Heinrich zwei Jahre später mit dem Gesetz gegen ungerechtfertigte Ketzerverfolgungen den kaiserlichen Ketzergesetzen von 1232 widerspricht, kommt es zum endgültigen Bruch mit dem Vater. Der lässt seinen Sohn durch den Papst bannen, setzt ihn 1235 ab (Wimpfen/Worms) ab und hält ihn sieben Jahre lang in Süditalien gefangen. 1242 stirbt Heinrich, vielleicht durch Selbstmord. Von diesen sieben Jahren berichtet der Erzähler, der Leibarzt und Beichtvater des gefangen Königs, er behandelt ihn, plaudert mit ihm und hält alle Details vom Leben der beiden in einer Art Tagebuch akribisch fest. Die Themen gibt der König vor, zuweilen äußert er sich zu hochpolitischen Themen, zuweilen über seinen Vater, dort in einer Mischung aus Politischem und sehr Privatem, zuweilen plaudert er über sehr Nebensächliches, Anekdoten aus seiner Kindheit und Jugend. Aber eben das Anekdotische gibt dem Text Farbe und macht das hohe Mittelalter lebendig. Zuweilen schweift auch der Erzähler ab. Wichtig aber, dass der Erzähler sehr detailliert eine Lepraerkrankung König Heinrichs beschreibt. Damit erscheint die Geschichte dieses unglücklichen Königs in einem neuen Licht: Die politische Gefangenschaft wird zur gesellschaftlichen Isolation eines Schwerkranken, der Selbstmord erf
