W�hrend die R�mer so an allen Stel en, wo sie selbst ihren Feinden gegen�berstanden, entschiedene Erfolge erzielten, gl�ckte es ihnen auf Sicilien nicht in gleichem Masse. Hier war im J. 215 der altbew�hrte Bundesgenosse Roms, K�nig Hiero II. Von Syrakus, gestorben. Sein Enkel Hieronymus, welcher ihm in der Regierung folgte, wurde durch zwei sehr schlaue Emissaire Hannibals, Hippokrates und Epikydes, zum Abfall von den R�mern und zum B�ndnis mit Carthago veranlasst. Ehe es jedoch zum Ausbruch der Feindseligkeiten kam, wurde gegen den stol zen, despotischen und grausamen J�ngli eine Verschw�rung gemacht, der er in der Stadt Leontini zum Op fer el. In Syrakus wurde nun die Republik proclamiert. Nach manchen Zwischenf�llen wussten die beiden genannten Br�der es schliesslich dahin zu bringen, dass sie zu Strategen erw�hlt wurden, und so gelang es ihnen auch der punischen Partei in der Stadt �ber die grosse Men e derer, welche das B�ndnis mit Rom bewahrt wissen wollten, zum iege zu verhelfen. Nachdem daher der unvermeidliche Bruch eingetreten war, schritt Marcellus, welcher nach der Einnahme von Casilinum seinem Collegen die Leitung des Krieges �berlassen hatte und nach Sicilien hin�bergegangen war, zur Belagerung der Stadt Syrakus. Die Besturmung geschah zu Wasser und zu Lande; aber acht Monate lang wurden alle Versuche der R�mer durch den be r�hmten Mathematiker und Ingenieur Archimedes vereitelt. Marcellus musste schliesslich von seinem Vorhaben abstehen und sich mit der Cer nietung der Stadt begn�gen. Zugleich suchte er in fr�herer Zeit zu den Carthagern abgefa: ll ene St�dte zuruckzuerobern (livius greift hier des Zusammenhanges wegen in das Jahr 213 hinuber); dies gelang ihm auch bei mehreren, schliesslich wurde aber durch allzu grosse H�rte und durch eine verabscheuungsw�rdige Perfidie gegen die Einwohner von Henna eine solche Erbitterung in allen Gemeinden Siciliens wach gerufen, dass auch die bisher noch Zweifelhaften sich unbedingt den Carthagern an schlossen, und die Sache Roms am Ende des J. 214 wesentlich ungun stiger auf Sicilien stand als zu Anfang des Jahres.
