A finales de los años ochenta del siglo veinte el régimen cubano presidido por Fidel Castro se encontraba empantanado en dos países africanos con sus cuerpos expedicionarios. Angola y Etiopia eran escenarios de sangrientos combates donde diariamente perdían la vida innumerables jóvenes llevados a combatir a través del Atlántico a más de 10,000 kilómetros de su patria. Como parte de la geopolítica de la Guerra Fría, las aventuras a gran escala que comenzaron en 1975 subvencionadas desde la URSS por la metrópolis soviética se convirtieron en una verdadera pesadilla tanto para Moscú como para La Habana. A los soviéticos, igualmente empantanados en Afganistán, se les hacía imposible continuar desangrándose política y económicamente con dichas aventuras y comenzaron a tomar medidas para terminarlas. A esta situación se agregó el malestar surgido dentro de las fuerzas armadas. Prestigiosos jefes militares cubanos comenzaron a cuestionar la racionalidad de mantener esos cuerpos expedicionarios y lo que resultaba más alarmante para el régimen; se señalaba abiertamente la responsabilidad de la dirección del gobierno encabezado por Fidel Castro por la difícil situación existente. El hecho de que el general Arnaldo Ochoa condecorado como héroe de la República de Cuba por sus destacados éxitos militares se convirtiera en uno de sus principales críticos, no solo complicaba más la situación sino que el castrismo comenzó a sentir que los cimientos del régimen comunista se quebraba. Como ha sucedido en la historia de las tiranías, surgieron las ideas y los planes para terminar con el responsable de la situación creada. En este libro se recoge con lujo de detalles uno de esos planes de tiranicidio que no cristalizaron por diferentes razones. Quizás, gracias a esos imponderables de la vida, se evitaron daños irreparables.
About the Author: El General Rafael del Pino se une al movimiento revolucionario 26 de Julio a los 17 años de edad en Diciembre 1955. Enviado a prisión en 1956. Sale al exilio en Venezuela en Diciembre de 1957.Participa en el alzamiento contra el dictador Marcos Pérez Jiménez en Venezuela. Es herido y encarcelado en la seguridad nacional hasta el 23 de Enero de 1958 en que cae la dictadura. Entra clandestino en Cuba a mediados de 1958 y se une al ejército rebelde comandado por Fidel Castro. Termina la guerra con el grado de 1er Teniente. Ingresa en la Fuerza Aérea en enero de 1959 y comienza el entrenamiento de vuelo. Participa en la Batalla de Bahía de Cochinos en abril de 1961. Derriba dos bombarderos B-26 de la fuerza aérea invasora y participa en el hundimiento del buque Houston y varios medios de desembarco de tropas Cumple un total de 25 misiones de combate en tres días. Asistente del Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro para la aviación durante la crisis de los misiles en Octubre de 1962. 1963-1965 pasa la Academia Superior de Guerra de la Fuerza Aérea "Yury Gagarin" en la URSS. 1965-1968 Jefe de la Defensa Antiaérea y Fuerza Aérea de la región Oriental de Cuba. 1968 Primera misión internacionalista en el norte de Vietnam como asesor. 1975 Segunda misión internacionalista en Vietnam del sur 1977 Jefe de la Fuerza Aérea del primer cuerpo expedicionario en África. 1983 Ascendido a General de Brigada. 1984 Director del programa "Maestros del Combate Aéreo"(Equivalente al Red Flag de USA). 1985 Ascendido a Sustituto del Jefe de la Defensa Antiaérea y Fuerza Aérea del país encargado de la seguridad de los vuelos y el control del espacio a aéreo. 1987 Rompe definitivamente con el régimen y escapa con toda su familia en un Cessna 402 bimotor volando hacia Estados Unidos. Desde esa fecha reside en algún lugar de Estados Un idos.
