Karen Anand has been described as “something of a food guru, influencing the way people eat and perceive good food”. In addition to writing extensively on the subject of food and wine for 25 years, she has also set up a factory producing gourmet food products under her own brand, run a successful chain of food stores, had a niche catering business, anchored top rated TV shows, started a Gourmet Academy and now consults for multinationals, International hotel and restaurant chains and F&B brands entering the Indian market. She works internationally and has contributed to restaurant projects in the UK. Her latest venture internationally is the hugely successful ‘Bombay Café in London’, Dishoom. Karen Anand was born in Bombay but grew up in London and Paris. She has a degree from Sussex University and Diplomas from the Sorbonne and Ecole des Sciences Politiques in Paris. She returned to India in 1984 and decided to dabble in cooking, until then a hobby, which eventually turned into a path breaking career. Karen conducts Master Classes for “Ananda” in the Himalayas, voted as the Best Spa in the World by Conde Nast Traveller. In 2006, she was awarded the prestigious Food & Spirit Award (Trophée de l’Esprit Alimentaire) for Culture from the French Government. Previous recipients of the award include the actress Meryl Streep and author Peter Mayle. In addition to just launching her 17th book, she also authors the yearly Times Food Guide culminating in the Times Food Awards for Pune and writes several columns every month for BBC Good Food, Good Housekeeping, Le City Deluxe and the Pune Times. Karen has recently fronted Taste of Mumbai (an International Food and Spirit Festival which is part of Taste Festivals UK) which took place in March, 2013. She and her husband also run the very successful Farmers Market in Pune and is the city’s first open air whole foods market which centres around the ‘farm to table’ concept. After nine successful markets in Pune, Mumbai and Gurgaon, they are now expanding the market to Bangalore and Kolkata too. Her TV experience includes a 52-episode travel food show in 1995 called the Good Food Guide for Star World; a 12-part series on Mumbai restaurants for Trend Mill CNBC and a 38-part series Cook na Kaho, for Star One where she taught young male celebs how to cook. The name “Karen Anand” is synonymous with good food and great hospitality with a strong professional core.
