Le jeune Baiming vit dans un modeste village au sud de la Chine.
Avec son copain Chu, il est devenu expert dans la capture des papillons, qu'il apporte ensuite à sa seule autre amie, une jeune vétérinaire, le Dr Song, venue du Nord et installée depuis peu dans la ville voisine de Jinhong. Loin de sa famille et de ses amis, elle tente d'oublier sa solitude en se plongeant dans son travail, mais aussi en prenant le jeune Baiming sous son aile. Elle l'aide à expertiser les papillons et à les revendre à des spécialistes de toute la Chine. Un argent de poche indispensable pour assurer au garçon de quoi survivre et ne pas céder, comme trop de ses camarades, à la délinquance. Song lui apprend également à respecter la nature et à mieux en comprendre les secrets.
Un matin, Baiming et Chu, à la recherche de spécimens de papillons, tombent nez à nez avec une femelle tigre et ses deux petits. Une espèce que Song avait déclarée à jamais éteinte. Leur frayeur passée, les deux garçons courent informer leur amie de cette incroyable découverte. Bien que sceptique, celle-ci accepte d'accompagner Baiming le lendemain, afin de vérifier ce qu'il en est. Entre-temps, hélas, le jeune Chu a bien du mal à tenir sa langue. Il est le neveu d'un important chef de la mafia locale, Mr Lin, et il sait que ces tigres vont lui rapporter énormément d'argent, en tout cas plus qu'une vie entière à attraper des papillons !
En constatant que Baiming et Chu ne lui ont pas menti, Song comprend que les chances de survie de la tigresse et de ses deux bébés sont très minces. Elle le comprend d'autant mieux lorsqu'elle apprend que les braconniers au service de l'oncle de Chu sont en route pour capturer les trois fauves.
Malgré les dangers que représentent la capture de ces animaux et, plus encore, le combat qu'ils vont devoir mener contre les braconniers excités par la prime promise, Song et Baiming décident de tout tenter pour sauver les trois tigres. Une véritable course contre la montre s'engage alors pour protéger ces derniers survivants.
Mais tout se complique lorsque Mr Lin dénonce le Dr Song à la police, au prétexte qu'elle se livrerait au trafic de papillons sauvages ! La situation s'aggrave encore avec la soudaine disparition de Baiming dans la jungle, et que l'on reste sans nouvelles de lui.
Heureusement, tout n'est pas simple non plus du côté de Mr Lin. Le capitaine de police se méfie de lui et, ayant aussi entendu les arguments de Song, ne compte pas le laisser agir à sa guise. Les braconniers rencontrent un autre obstacle sur leur chemin: les tigres eux-mêmes ! Les fauves ne sont guère faciles à attraper et abattre. Cela fait longtemps qu'ils fuient les hommes et leur folie destructrice. Ils ont appris à s'en méfier et à se défendre.
Ce roman a obtenu le Prix NRP Littérature jeunesse, attribué par les professeurs de collège et de lycée, lors de sa parution. C'est avec Le tigre de Baiming qu'Actes Sud a créé sa collection Aventure .
