Decía Luis Buñuel que en su pueblo, en la provincia de Teruel, la Edad Media había durado hasta bien entrado el siglo xx. Something like that happens in the setting of this novel, a place that can be almost anywhere in the interior of Spain. There, at the dawn of the Second Republic, a boy named Blas is born. And there he dies, 80 years later, without knowing that he takes to the grave a thousand-year-old lifestyle. He is the last. Nobody else follows in his footsteps. Blas knows about animals, vines and tomatoes, he knows how to take care of his family, and he also knows how to keep more than a few secrets.

The life of Blas, an ordinary story that the river of time has now made unique, is the story of Spain in the last century. Told with hands stained by that bare earth that an entire rural society lived on, it's directed to that part of us that is not resigned to living among bricks.
