En este contexto histórico convulso, de profundos cambios cuyos efectos se dejarán sentir en los siglos venideros, dos monjes, Abelardo de Erblay y Armando de Altavila, acompañados de un joven amanuense, Guillot de Batz, acuden en peregrinación desde la Borgoña francesa hasta la recién liberada ciudad de Jerusalén para conseguir el apoyo a la causa del Císter de los nuevos estados latinos de oriente. El viaje será largo y azaroso, y a su llegada descubren con pesar que en la ciudad no hay nadie que pueda atenderles ya que la mayoría de los nobles se encuentran combatiendo contra Egipto para afianzar las fronteras del recién creado reino. Además, los pocos caballeros que quedan dentro de sus murallas están pereciendo víctimas de una extraña plaga que los va diezmando. Abelardo de Erblay, que tiene fama de sabio en su tierra, se ve fascinado por el enigma de estas muertes inexplicables, que además los caballeros de Jerusalén intentan ocultar por todos los medios, inventándose mentiras con las que evitar el recelo del resto de la población de la ciudad. Sirviéndose de la lógica aristotélica y del método científico de Avicena, profundizará en los secretos más ocultos de estos hombres que, provenientes de los más lejanos rincones de Europa, han acabado unidos por la fe, pero también por la ambición, en el otro extremo del mundo. Los tres peregrinos, alojados en el hospital de la Orden de San Juan, saboteados una y otra vez por el rector de esa comunidad y sus monjes, y seguidos muy de cerca por un personaje misterioso que parece un sarraceno, recorrerán la ciudad en busca de algún dato, alguna pista, que les permita terminar con la espantosa sangría, sabiendo que cada segundo puede representar una muerte más que pesará sobre sus conciencias. Envueltos en la creencia generalizada de que la recuperación de Tierra Santa es la señal divina que iniciará el fin de los tiempos, comenzará así la persecución de un asesino invisible y despiadado que recorre la ciudad santa como una maldición. Los rumores que circulan entre monjes y soldados, el encuentro de un antiguo manuscrito escrito en un idioma desconocido, las leyendas de hebreos y musulmanes, y los propios evangelios, les revelarán una conjura nacida en las más altas esferas del poder y acabarán conduciéndoles hasta una cueva situada más allá del valle de Gehenna, en las afueras de Jerusalén, donde se oculta enterrado un secreto de los tiempos de Jesús que hará tambalear su misma fe y que podría destruir a la Iglesia.
