"Tiempos de cerezas y adioses" reúne en un solo volumen las dos novelas de carácter histórico publicadas, respectivamente, en 2015 y 2016: "El corto tiempo de las cerezas" y "Adiós, mirlo, adiós (Bye Bye Blackbird)"."El corto tiempo de las cerezas" narra la vida de Samuel Valls, nacido en 1849, "el cuarto hijo de una familia de campesinos sin tierra que, ante la acumulación de deudas y la imposibilidad de pagar el arrendamiento, se ve obligada a trasladarse a la ciudad y buscar trabajo en alguna de las distintas fábricas (...) Pero Samuel no tiene intención de deslomarse trabajando como su padre para terminar tan pobre como empezó. Sin miedo a la pobreza y sin ambiciones materiales, desde los doce años decide ser el único dueño de su destino (...).A partir de aquí "se tratan episodios históricos de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, un siglo que se dilata hasta 1914, si no cronológicamente, sí históricamente. (...) Es Samuel quien interpreta los hechos porque, aunque la novela está contada en tercera persona, el narrador no es omnisciente, sino que, a partir de cierto momento, está siempre en la cabeza de Samuel y habla desde la perspectiva de Samuel.Y por boca de ese narrador y a través de los ojos de Samuel, Manuel Cerdà nos narra los hechos que, desde el siglo XIX, llevaron a los convulsos acontecimientos que recorrieron todo el siglo XX. Nos da las claves y nos deja preparados para adentrarnos en su siguiente novela (aunque igual se disfrutan si se leen en orden inverso) y transitar por ese siglo desdichado de "Adiós, mirlo, adiós" en el que 'ha habido más muertos por violencia que en toda la historia de la humanidad'."Adiós, mirlo, adiós (Bye Bye Blackbird)" es "una historia novelada, la misma que escribió Ken Follet en los tres tomos como tres ladrillos que constituyen la Trilogía del siglo, pero para mí mucho mejor (...) porque está mejor escrita, carece del tono didáctico y machacón de la trilogía de Follet, no tiene tanta paja y, sobre todo, tiene mucha más alma, más sentimiento más emoción.Manuel Cerdà (...) se retrata, huye de lo políticamente correcto y dice cosas que no gustarán a todos, pero que yo no tengo más remedio que suscribir como parte de mi propio pensamiento ¡Bienvenidos a la democracia, amigos! Ahora podréis votar cada tiempo [...]. Claro que sí, faltaría más. A disfrutar de la libertad, que ya era hora, a comer hamburguesas, a vestirse con vaqueros, a beber Coca-Cola...
