Cuentan que tuvo una secreta mina de oro en compañía de otros dos socios, quienes al morir los tres, se llevaron el secreto de la ubicación a la tumba tal vez honrando un antiguo pacto de caballeros, pues ni a sus hijos le enseñaron la tal mina. Por lo que la mina quedó en medio de la realidad y la leyenda. Pero lo cierto era que él de vez en cuando se aparecía en su casa con grandes chicharrones de oro puro. Probablemente ese oro fue la base de su riqueza, pues para la época de esta historia, él ya cercano a los 40 años, era dueño de dos fincas una de caña panelera y otra de ganado lechero con buenos caballos y mulas, de una gran casa en el pueblo, además de una tienda de granos y abarrotes situada en la misma plaza principal de Carolina. Así que fácilmente podía costearle a su única hija el mejor colegio de la región, un internado para señoritas en la pequeña ciudad de Yarumal, dirigido por monjas. A donde por lo menos una vez al mes iba a visitarla como padre responsable que era. Un día mientras visitaba a Graciela, ella muy alegremente le presentó a su mejor amiga y compañera, uno o dos años mayor, la bella joven Magdalena Botero, de familia de blanca estirpe radicada en Yarumal cuyos ancestro seguramente provenían de Italia, de acuerdo al apellido, pero con poco oro. El señor Carvajal quedó prendado, pero como en un buen romance la desprevenida presentación traería problemas..."
