Ce livre sur le théâtre dans les pays arabes (404 pages) permet de comprendre les rapports très délicats avec la France et l'Europe, à l'origine de l'émergence de cet art dans ces pays, mais aussi les différents conflits latents entre les sociétés arabes et l'espace occidental . L'ouvrage donne à lire les conditions d'émergence des différentes formes de représentation européennes, mais surtout les crises caractérisant ces sociétés. À partir du parcours des femmes et des hommes de l'art de la scène et des différentes instances thématiques et esthétiques, le lecteur pourrait comprendre les rapports entre Arabes et Européens, les différentes crises internes qui secouent encore les pays arabes, mais aussi les espaces sociologiques et politiques.
Ce sont des configurations sociologiques et des contingences historiques particulières qui ont permis 'adoption ou le rejet de ce type de représentation, au même titre, d'ailleurs, que les autres formes culturelles et politiques. Il n'est pas du tout surprenant que les pays du Golfe, trop conservateurs et dont le discours wahabite considère l'image comme inadmissible en Islam, n'aient pas adopté rapidement cet art.
Cet ouvrage tente de saisir les conditions d'émergence du théâtre et son évolution tout en présentant les acteurs de la mise en oeuvre de cet art et de mettre en relief d'autres aspects comme la relation avec l'Europe, les lieux théâtraux et la contribution de cet art à un éveil social et politique possible.
Cet ouvrage qui ne s'arrête pas uniquement à l'inventaire de certains faits et manifestations, présente les différentes tendances et itinéraires qui ont marqué la représentation théâtrale dans les pays arabes. La lecture de ce texte pourrait aider le lecteur à comprendre les crises et les événements qui secouent les sociétés arabes ces derniers temps. Le théâtre est ici le lieu, par excellence, de la mise en relief de belles choses, mais aussi et surtout de pratiques très sombres comme la censure, les différentes atteintes aux droits humains, mais aussi la place et la responsabilité de l'intellectuel et ses rapports avec les pouvoirs en place.
