About the Book

Three Blind Mice is the untold story of the three Presidents before Abraham Lincoln during the decade between 1850-1860, leading up to the American Civil War. By taking a critical look at each President, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan, and discussing both popular and little known facts, as well as extenuating events, Murphy lets the reader decide if, by the decisions each man made and DID NOT MAKE, the American Civil War could have been avoided. Included in his examination is a thorough and sometimes unflattering view of key people in each President's cabinet and significant figures of the Legislative and Judicial Branches of United States Government at that time. There is also a close analysis of high profile events of the day, such as the United States Supreme Court case of Dred Scott, the beginning of the Woman's Suffrage Movement, the state of slavery during the run-up to the Civil War and the effects each event had on the Presidents and their actions. Also, discussed is legislation such as the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act and most events that contributed to the founding of the Confederate States of America and the start of the American Civil War. Lastly, Murphy discusses how world events during the decade, including British imperialism, The Crimean War, and the role of energy during the period all impacted the tragic events to come. Throughout the book the reader is offered opinionated and humorous interpretations of the events of the day and is guided to make their own observations as well. Darryl Murphy is a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy, Wayne, PA and holds a degree in Banking and Finance from Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC.
