About the Book

A Thread Runs Through Herstory is a narrative of family, history, and culture. This memoir/biography is about ordinary women who have no fame or wealth but who rely on their goals, their determination, and their faith to stand strong in the face of obstacles. The book not only relates the philosophies and spiritual outlook of the author, but also describes the experiences of three women in her African American family: her 98-year-old mother, a grandmother born in 1891, and a 108-year-old aunt. In a personal way it reveals some historical events that span a period of over 150 years as it interweaves these four women's narratives from each of their own perspectives. How fascinating it is to learn about The Reconstruction Period after slavery in Virginia or the 1919 race riots in Washington from someone who was there! While this book gives some background information on parts of Washington, Maryland, and Virginia, A Thread Runs Through Herstory uniquely gives readers a glimpse at the spiritual strength of an African American family as the basis of their stability and endurance. The humorous, sensitive, frightening, and uplifting stories that these women tell provide a positive message for women of all races and for young adults of both sexes in their quest to overcome life's struggles in order to create wholesome family structures. The average person will surely relate to the people in A Thread Runs Through Herstory and can learn from their life stories.
About the Author: Anita Lynn Lee, author of A Thread Runs Through Herstory (2013), has also written three books for youth: The Ghost and Me (2008), Kenny's Amazing Adventures (2009), and Princess Lea Lucia (2011). Mrs. Lee is a retired teacher who currently lives with her husband Robert in Brookeville, MD. With a Master of Arts in Reading, she taught special education, elementary education, and reading/language arts in both private and public schools in Washington, DC for over 33 years. Observing nature, reading, writing, playing the piano, traveling, doing puzzles, and being with family and friends are hobbies of Mrs. Lee. She also finds fulfillment by being active in her church. Her family includes not only her daughter, son, and three grandchildren, but the extended relatives in her family and her husband's family. Although most of her family lives in Washington, Maryland and Virginia, her brother and his family live in California. Elements of Mrs. Lee's religious background, her family experiences, and her interests are visible in her writing. Author/Educator Anita Lynn Lee believes that reading should be an exciting experience for everyone, young and old. Her books are not only fun to read, but also contain something to learn.
