About the Book

Unter der Bezeichnung 'Thomas III' lauft eine um 1250 verfasste und vor allem im bayerisch-osterreichischen Raum verbreitete Naturkunde-Enzyklopadie in lateinischer Sprache. Das Werk basiert auf den Fassungen von 'De natura rerum' des Thomas von Cantimpre (ca. 1201 - ca. 1270) und stellt sich als dritte neben seine authentischen Redaktionen ('Thomas I', 'Thomas II'; ed. Helmut Boese 1973), ohne von Thomas selbst zu sein. 'Thomas III' wahlt aus Thomas I-II aus, fugt Material aus weiteren Quellen hinzu, arrangiert die Buchanordnung um und modifiziert den Text. Die Summe dieser Eingriffe vermittelt den Eindruck lebhaften Interesses an naturkundlichem Wissen und gibt - im Zusammenspiel mit der Erforschung der Handschriftenbesitzer - Aufschluss uber die Rezipienten des Werks. Hinsichtlich der Naturkunde belegt 'Thomas III' einen Mentalitatswandel: die 'Neugier' richtet sich auf die Dinge selbst und betrachtet nicht - wie noch im 12. Jahrhundert - Naturgegenstande vorwiegend als Ausgangsmaterial fur geistliche Deutung. Diese neue Sicht auf die Natur ist ahnlich in den grossen Enzyklopadien des 13. Jahrhunderts (Thomas I-II, Bartholomaus Anglicus, Vincenz von Beauvais) greifbar, von denen 'Thomas III' der Benutzerkreis unterscheidet. Die Leser der erstgenannten sind Universitatsgelehrte, die von 'Thomas III' der Klerus in vielfaltigen Abstufungen - vom Kardinal uber Klostergeistliche (dominant) bis zum Weltgeistlichen -, wie auch - in bescheidenerem Umfang - Laien, hier v.a. vom Humanismus gepragte prominente Mediziner, wie Helgard Ulmschneider in der Analyse des Handschriftenbestands herausarbeitet. Damit hat das neue Bewusstsein die intellektuelle 'middle class' erreicht, die dann ihr Weltinteresse und Wissen in Ubersetzungen an ein Laienpublikum weitergibt. Diese Beobachtungen sind ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Bildungsgeschichte des Spatmittelalters. Fur literaturtheoretische Fragestellungen erlaubt es die Ausgabe, die Sequenz der Redaktionen, die unterschiedliche Intentionalitat der Redaktoren, das Spiel von Vorlagentreue und Varianz zu verfolgen. Der fur Veranderungen freigegebene mittelalterliche Fachtext wird dabei keineswegs 'autorlos'. Er zeigt sich vielmehr als Produkt einer Mehrzahl von Autoren, deren jeweilige Eigenart erkennbar und bestimmbar ist. Die Entstehungsanalyse dieses Komplexes und ahnlich gelagerter Falle liefert Argumente in der Diskussion, ob und in wieweit der Verzicht auf den Autorbegriff fur das Verstandnis mittelalterlicher Texte hilfreich sein kann. Bei der Wirkungsgeschichte von Thomas III tritt neben die enorme Verbreitung auch vielfaltige literarische Rezeption. Beispielhaft sei auf die erste Naturenzyklopadie in deutscher Sprache, Konrads von Megenberg 'Buch der Natur' verwiesen. Er folgt Thomas III als Hauptquelle oft so genau, dass sich bestimmen lasst, welche Redaktion er im jeweiligen Kapitel heranzieht. Fur die Beurteilung der Eigenleistung Konrads (und anderer volkssprachiger Rezipienten) ist 'Thomas III' in der nun vorliegenden Ausgabe unverzichtbar.
