About the Book

This is the remarkable Story of the Life of John Hassler Dietrich, the Father of Modern Humanism. He grew up in a conservative religious household, went to college and studied Science and then went to Seminary where he met liberal Unitarians. He became a Conservative Minister but his views had become liberal and exciting, so attendance rose from under a hundred to over a thousand. He was removed as a Heretic. He became a Unitarian liberal Christian and the minister of a failing Church in Spokane, Washington where he increased attendance into the Thousands requiring services to be held in a large theatre. He was a Scholar who spent many hours researching issues and wrote speeches that were an hour in length. He spoke like an Evangelist but his speeches were about human issues and not about God, more like a Philosopher. He named his changing beliefs "Humanism," because his concerns were about humans. He moved to the more heavily populated area of Minneapolis, Minnesota in order to have a greater impact on people. Thousands attended his services so he had to speak at another Theater. He also began speaking on the Radio in the 1930's to reach more people. His messages were based upon a Scientific view of the World. After he retired in 1938 he continued to examine his beliefs. In his last years he wrote papers titled, "Thoughts on God," It appears to regret being so rational, and adds what he calls Natural Spirituality. It is not about spirits or Gods but about human Emotion, Wonder, and Awe, which is natural to all humans and not related to Gods. There have been over 8000 known Gods and most of the Religions based on Gods have failed because they were made up, by people, and have nothing to do with real Gods. All of the modern Religions and Gods are made up based on the older Gods. Christmas, Easter, and much more were copied from what was known as Pagan Religion. The Founding Fathers of the United States knew the history of Religions in power of governments, ruled by repressing other beliefs so they created freedom of Religion so that all people could have a voice in Government and keep it away from religions who all have different views of God and Gods ways. President Trump is now giving power to the most Conservative Christianity over all others. Dietrich opposed all of that kind of thinking. Humanists, Moslems, Jews, and other Religions like Christianity should not rule over others in a Democracy. The Minneapolis Unitarian Society is working on the second hundred years of Dietrich's teachings. I, Editor Douglas Peary, am proud to have had a huge role of making Dietrich's Speech's readable because they read and feel like listening to a great speaker. This is his wife's biography of him in 1942 with my added thoughts afterward.
