About the Book

The Third Miss St. Quentin is a novel written by Mary Louisa Molesworth and published in 1888. The story revolves around the St. Quentin family, who live in a grand old house in the English countryside. The family consists of three sisters, the eldest of whom is married and lives elsewhere. The middle sister, Miss St. Quentin, is the main character of the novel. She is a kind and gentle woman who is devoted to her family, but who also longs for adventure and excitement in her life. The story begins with the arrival of a new governess, Miss Betsy Trotwood, who is hired to teach the youngest St. Quentin sister, Dolly. Miss Trotwood is a strict and stern woman who quickly clashes with the rest of the family, especially Miss St. Quentin. However, as the story progresses, Miss Trotwood and Miss St. Quentin begin to develop a friendship, and Miss Trotwood helps Miss St. Quentin to discover her own strength and independence.Meanwhile, there are other events unfolding in the St. Quentin household. The family's financial situation is precarious, and they are forced to take in a lodger, a young artist named Mr. Markham. Miss St. Quentin is drawn to Mr. Markham, and they develop a close friendship. However, their relationship is complicated by the arrival of Miss Trotwood's nephew, Mr. Dick, who is also interested in Miss St. Quentin. As the novel reaches its climax, the St. Quentin family faces a crisis that threatens to tear them apart. Miss St. Quentin must use all of her strength and courage to help her family through this difficult time and to find her own path in life.Overall, The Third Miss St. Quentin is a charming and engaging novel that explores themes of family, friendship, and the search for identity. Molesworth's writing is witty and insightful, and her characters are vividly drawn and memorable. This book is a must-read for fans of classic English literature and for anyone who enjoys a good story with heart and depth. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
