About the Book

Meet a woman who only truly begins to live the moment after her death! The Third Mile tells Jackie Istinoff's story, beginning on September27th, 1970, the day she runs her 1st marathon, at age 15, when she has a dream which provides a glimpse into the life beyond this one- a true gift from God. the vision she sees in her dream is so vivid that she declares September 27th, or"927" as she calls it, her secret personal holiday. This dream sustains her into old age. What really happened to Jackie that day? Just a dream or a true out-of-body experience? The action then shifts ahead 57 years to September 27th, 2027, a date that has a magical ring to it. Her life in the intervening years has been a hard one. She staged a lifelong battle with bipolar disorder, which is also her gift. She also has an unusually conflicted personality- naturally exuberant and outgoing, especially when belting out 1980s songs while standing on picnic tables, she is also crippled by an empathy with others so intense that she must isolate herself from others in order to avoid hearing abut others' suffering and maintain what she calls her firewalls. the need for these firewalls has resulted in loneliness, joblessness, credit card debt, reliance on public assistance and subsidized housing. Her poverty has brought her to a desolate, polluted industrial suburb by now. Terminally ill but unaware of it, she wakes up to feel strangely compelled to attempt a training run for an upcoming charity race, even though the temperature promises to be 90 degrees by noon during an unnatural heatwave. This is the climate-change ravaged world of 2027. Her run, which passes through the heart of a smog-laden industrial zone filled with derelict and working factories soon turns into a harrowing footrace over nightmare terrain under a burning sky. Jackie suffers a fatal heart attack and dies.AND BEGINS TO LIVE! She awakes to find herself reborn to immortal perfection, jumps into a red 1968 Jaguar E-Type, the car of her dreams, kindly provided by a Higher Power, for a heart-pounding ride over the Interchange between the finite and infinite worlds. She then enters a beautiful, mystical forest where she discovers a Sacred Scroll filled with the answers to all the questions that torment her on Earth and assures her that there will be no more suffering, effort or sorrow. She gladly discards her firewalls. She wanders on into a clearing where she is reunited with beloved pets believed long dead. The joyful part of her life begins. She emerges from the forest just in time to crash a picnic of escapees from the last days of Earth. The picnic is also a sort of news exchange. The attendees tell of the 2 world wars of the 21st century, and the implosion of the environment that has made Earth uninhabitable. The end of the world has occurred. EXCEPT IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD! All beings are safely on the other side, free of suffering at last. Knowing this, Jackie begins to enjoy socializing for the 1st time in her life. Because of this, she returns home for a series of reunions- a large extended family reunion in a local park, as well as more intimate ones- a moving reliving of her last days with her aged mother (who is no longer aged) a trip to Ternopol, Ukraine to see her father at his parents' birthplace (she teaches her Old World, technophobe grandma how to take a selfie) and a return to her home city for a school reunion, believe me, there's never been a school reunion like this one on Earth! She takes a bus trip deep into the heart of1975 to meet an old lover- and resume a relationship that had been destroyed by Jackie's need for firewalls. The story ends with Jackie, and all the other people she meets, revealing surprising truths about themselves, and showing vibrant, joyful, loving natures that were often obscured by the layers of defenses needed to survive on Earth. But as Jackie says, "Things are different here."
