About the Book

EXTRACT: "The thought is human's only reality whether it is something we do or something we think. Thinking is how the human being experiences reality, and it is from thinking that we define ourselves. The question is how Eros is an insight into the righteous thinking? Or rather, how does a thinking with Eros lead the human towards being itself as a life worth living?"

How does Eros unfold a thought play of philosophy? Or rather, how can we learn to think with Eros? If Eros is a story of the human's desire for beauty, it is also the story of a philosophical concept with which we can learn to think. If thinking is longing for something more and other than what thinking is, of what is beautiful and the good, Plato makes it the subject of his masterpiece, the Symposium. As an insight into how we can think with Eros, Plato's main work transforms the traditional Eros concept, showing how we can understand Eros as philosophical thinking of meaningful insight to transform into beauty because neither thinking nor thoughts are unique, universal, or preserving, yet explicate the conditions for the human reality of meanings, interpretations, and narratives. Rather, in an interplay as a counterplay between the desire and beauty, good and slavish, eternal and transient, a new philosophical Eros concept emerges from Diotima's speech about what makes life worth living. In thinking with Eros, Diotima explicates a thought play of how to see beauty in its righteous relation. The Symposium explicates a wordplay of how desire is a pursuit of beauty yet, transforming into an insight about how thinking with Eros is the good because what is good is also beautiful, and what is beautiful is good, which makes life worth living.

QUOTE: "Why is it that Eros holds both the secret of questions and answers, and the secret of an insistence in all our existence?"
(Gilles Deleuze, Difference and Repetition, p. 107)

"It is question of 'making a difference', of distinguishing the 'thing' itself from its images, the original from the copy, the model from the simulacrum. [...] The Platonic project comes to light only when we turn back to the method of division, for this project is not just one dialectic procedure among others. It assembles the whole power of the dialectic in order to combine it with another power."
(Gilles Deleuze The Logic of Sense, p. 291)
