About the Book

After graduating college with thousands of dollars of debt and hopes of becoming an educator, Daunte found himself in a place of complete surrender. He applied, but the job's never came. The rent was due, and his in-between jobs at Subway and U.S. Cellular were barely making ends meet. Upon moving to Chicago, Daunte felt that God was calling him to be greater. He knew his sense of purpose was larger than the minimum wage he earned from 80 hours. The universal shift occurred when Daunte prayed to God one night. In his prayer he cried out to the Lord asking him to heal his wounds, forgive him of his past, correct his walk and give him purpose. God responded mightily and provided him with the direction to write this poetic bestseller. Henderson's words reflect the true ebbs and flows of what it means to be human. His reflections on spirituality speak to the dual existence we all live in as beings trying to do right, but caught up in the web of wrong at times. Things I Learned While Walking reminds us that love lost is painfully tragic, but artfully designed to teach us and develop our character. This book was inspired heavily by Henderson's time in Chicago, specifically Englewood on the city's Southside. His walks down the many famous streets of Chicago provide a rich commentary on not only the state of Black Chicago, but America as a whole. Although this book was mainly written in Chicago during 2009-2010, works from Henderson's time in St. Louis, Atlanta and Peoria are also included. About the Author: Daunte Henderson is an educator, speaker and author of the 2010 best-seller Things I Learned While Walking. Brother Henderson as he's affectionately called by his students, is a true renaissance man. He can be seen teaching students of all ages on the "ins and outs" of going to college or writing books that tackle self awareness, race, relationships and religion. Henderson is also an engaging speaker that travels across the United States speaking about self awareness, hip-hop and entrepreneurship. Henderson truly embodies the "go getter" motto of many of his influences such as his mother who instilled in him an industrious and independent sprit. Daunte's work and life path is strongly influenced by the teachings of Malcolm X, Master P and Jay-Z to name a few. Men whom he believes are "the masters of their fate and the captain of their souls" as the great Earnest Henley poem says.
