About the Book

Do you ever wonder what the secrets are for you and your team members to perform at peak levels? Are you ready to Achieve the Unachievable? In this new book, leadership expert Bill Edson shares his proven philosophies and best practices that have shaped teams and changed lives from his passionate perspective as an Athletics Cross Country and Track & Field Coach for nearly three decades. It is written in a relatable voice of real conversation and enjoyable personal life stories. He will guide you through topics that include Coaching is Leading, Seeing the Invisible, The Power of Connection, Warrior Mentality, Culture, Peak Performance, Hope is Not a Strategy, and many more pearls of experience and wisdom. This book will definitively provide you the extra advantage that you seek for you as an effective leader, your teams, and your athletes or followers to fulfill the 'Coach E' promise to "Achieve something that before this day they believed was unachievable."Bill Edson, "Coach E" as called by his athletes, has a strong history of extremely positive transformational change with all the teams that he has coached and organizations he has led. The philosophies and processes that he has used to reach high levels of both team and individual success are universal to other forms of leadership such as in business, military, healthcare, non-profits, education, church, and families. Any place that you lead people, this book will provide you a means for improvement or validation as an effective and efficient leader.Bill has also utilized these principles as a highly decorated military leader, having served 23 years in the United States Army during times of peace and war. He was a successful non-profit business executive for 10 years. And, he also worked within the Organizational Leadership graduate program for Norwich University as an instructor and curriculum writer.Enjoy this excerpt from this fun Chapter- "Making Chicken Salad" When I was in Basic Training after I joined the United States Army, I remember one of my Drill Sergeants making this statement upon arriving at boot camp, "I am tasked with the impossible task. It is my job to make you all into soldiers. It's like making chicken salad out of chicken shit."I cannot help but think that this saying perfectly sums up my job as a coach. Now, before you get your panties all up in a bunch, what I am NOT saying is that those I coach are equivalent to that of chicken excrement. Remember this, number 1; This is only a saying and within any saying there is meaning. Number 2; Do not get all emotional about things. As a coach, you have assumed a serious responsibility as a real leader. This requires real leader skills to which one is having the ability to filter out emotion within your tasks as a coach. I am not saying that you should ignore or discredit emotions, emotions can be an especially important element of the coaching experience. What I am saying is that you must filter them, control them, and never make a decision, judgment, or statement based purely on emotion. In the leadership world, this is called emotional intelligence. It is the ability to recognize and measure emotions in order to maintain control of the environment in which you are leading. Emotions can be the critical tool that will help inspire your athletes to victory or discourage them into defeatism. Now, back to the meaning of the saying. One part of why I love coaching is that every year, every season, the dynamics of building a team is different. Not one season is the same. Even if you have the same kids, changes occur within the dynamic of those athletes that create new challenges or offer fresh possibilities. It is like an artist who would be handed a blank canvas or a lump of clay and then have the ability to create it into a masterpiece painting or beautiful sculpture....
