About the Book

This book focuses on both fundamental aspects and advanced topics on mechanics of fluid film lubrication. It begins with a general historical background of lubrication, friction and wear, now commonly known as Tribology. Discussing fundamental aspects of viscosity and rheology of fluids used as lubricants in mechanical components and systems including its measurement, the work also looks at fluid dynamics aspects of lubricant films and development of basic equations of lubricant films. It also engages with theories of various modes of lubrication like hydrodynamic, hydrostatic/externally pressurized, elastohydrodynamic and squeeze film lubrication, among other topics.

The advanced topics covered in the book include: Thermal effects and temperature rise in lubricant films Lubricant film dynamics Rotor dynamics and vibration Fluid inertia and turbulence effects at high speed Gas lubrication Theory of Lubrication primarily serves the needs of students specializing in design of mechanical systems, researchers, practicing mechanical engineers working in R&D sectors and faculty members of mechanical department handling mechanical design.

About the Author:

M.K. Ghosh is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a life member of Tribology Society of India. He was Professor of Mechanical Engineering at IIT BHU, Varanasi and IIT Kharagpur. He has also worked as NRC Research Associate and as Senior Research Associate at NASA Glenn, USA. He has published around 60 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and supervised over 33 graduate theses and 7 PhD theses.

B.C. Majumdar is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur and has held Senior Research Associateship with Research Council at NASA, Lewis Research Centre, USA. He has published over 100 papers in reputed journals abroad and has also written a book on tribology. He has guided over 18 PhD candidates on various aspects of lubrication and mechanical design. Mihir Sarangi is Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur and has taught in IIT Bombay earlier. He has also contributed 7 papers in reputed journals abroad, and his research interests include tribology, machine design and machine dynamics.
