Adornos Gesellschaftskritik, und dabei besonders die Theorie der Kulturindustrie, soll in der folgenden Arbeit dargestellt werden. Dem vorangestellt wird eine Kurzbiographie Adornos sowie erklärende Angaben zur Frankfurter Schule und zur Kritischen Theorie. Die Massenmedien begegnen uns täglich in verschiedenen Bereichen des Lebens. Zu ihnen zählen unter anderem das Fernsehen, das Radio, die Presse und das Internet. Sie sollen den Menschen vor allem über politische und gesellschaftliche Ereignisse informieren und eine Massenkommunikation ermöglichen. Dabei selektieren sie jedoch auch. Es wird ohne Befragung der Gesellschaft ausgesucht, welche Nachrichten wichtiger sind als andere und somit gesendet oder gedruckt werden können. Ein Prozess, der alle Menschen in diese Auswahl integriert, wäre auch nicht möglich, genauso wenig wie ein alle Informationen umfassendes Medium. Das Internet, welches dem entsprechen würde, kann hierbei nicht berücksichtigt werden, da dies eine komplexere Analyse erfordern würde, die nicht Zweck dieser Arbeit ist. Durch die genannte Struktur besteht die Gefahr der Manipulation und Propaganda, da die Massenmedien eine zentrale Rolle bei der Meinungsbildung der breiten Bevölkerung spielen. Sie haben demzufolge eine große Verantwortung gegenüber ihren Rezipienten und der Gesellschaft. Neben ihrer Funktion der Informationsübertragung, versorgen sie ihre Rezipienten jedoch auch mit Unterhaltung. Dies kann unter anderem auch darauf zurückgeführt werden, dass viele Medien sich größtenteils durch Werbung finanzieren, wobei unter anderem die Einschaltquoten über die Höhe des Betrages entscheiden.
