About the Book

English summary: Born in 1608 in Demmin, Western Pomerania, Joachim Lutkemann served as a preacher at St. Jacobi church and as a professor of metaphysics at the University of Rostock for nearly 20 years, until 1649, when he got involved in a controversial academic debate regarding the question whether Christ had been a true man during the three days between Good Friday and Easter. Lutkemann denied this, provoking the disapproval of the local duke who eventually removed him from all his posts and sent him into exile. The berated preacher took refuge with Duke Augustus the Younger in Wolfenbuttel where he served as a clergyman and especially as a re-organizer of the church in the principality after the Thirty Years' War until his early death in 1655. His devotional writings and witty sermons influenced Philipp Jacob Spener's private religious gatherings and the Halle Mission, which is why Lutkemann can certainly be considered an intermediate between orthodoxy and pietism. By using as many available sources as possible and through reference to the rather selective research done on the subject up to now, Christoph Deuper presents the life and work of this previously rather undiscovered figure.
