Jahrhundert war - wie für alle Staaten der Westlichen Hemisphäre - eine Zeit der tiefgreifenden Transformationen im sozialen, kulturellen und politischem Bereich. Die Spezifika für die USA bestanden einerseits in der zum Ende geführten Erschließung des nordamerikanischen Kontinents, verbunden mit der letztlichen Subordination der Native Americans unter das Primat der Ansprüche und Politiken der weißen Gesellschaft. Weiterhin war die Zeit nach dem Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg geprägt von Hochindustrialisierung, dem Entstehen eines Oligopols von Großunternehmen in der Stahl, Kohle, und Eisenbahnindustrie, während auf der Arbeitnehmerseite sich der Organisierungsgrad erhöhte und Gewerkschaften immer größere Erfolge verbuchen konnten. [...] Die Spannungen in der Arbeiterschaft und zwischen Arbeitern und Arbeitgebern nahmen als Folge der Massenmigrationsbewegungen [...] massiv zu. Erstens sah man die neuen Einwanderer als Bedrohung für den etablierten Arbeitsmarkt, da sie für weniger Lohn Beschäftigungen okkupierten als die bereits ansässigen Amerikaner. Hinzu mischte sich ein rassistischer Unterton in die Kritik, geübt durch die sogenannten Natives an den größtenteils katholisch- bzw. jüdisch-gläubigen Immigranten, welche sich auch in spürbarer manifester Gewalt manifestierten. Das Eindringen von Frauen in den ökonomischen Sektor als Beschäftige in Textilindustrie, als Sekretärinnen oder in den sozialen Diensten, wie auch ihr Engagement in der politischen Arena über Suffrage und Temperance Movement; also der de-facto Aufhebung der Trennung von privater und öffentlicher Sphäre, provozierte in Zusammenwirken mit den anderen genannten Faktoren geradezu eine Neudefinition der American Masculinity, die sich als Selbstertüchtigung (Strenuous Life) und B
