Il est tout un nu tre ordre d'idees, non moins hautes selon lui, qu'il voudrait avoir le loisir de remuer et d'approfondir a l'occasion de cette piece de Lucrece Borgia. A ses yeux, il y a beaucoup de questions sociales dans les questions litteraires, et toute oeuvre est une action. Voila le sujet sur lequel il s'etendait volontiers, si l'espace et le temps ne lui manquaient. Le theatre, on ne saurait trop le repeter, a de nos jours une importance immense, et qui tend a s'accroitre sans cesse avec la civilisation meme. Le theatre est une tribune. Le theatre est une chaire. Le theatre parle fort et parle haut. Lorsque Corneille dit Pour etre plus qu'un roi, tu te crois quelque chose Corneille c'est Mirabeau. Quand Shakspeare dit: To die, to sleep, Shakspeare c'est Bossuet.

L'auteur de ce drame sait combien c'est une grande et serieuse chose que le theatre. Il sait que le drame, sans sortir des limites impartiales de l'art, a une mission natio nale, une mission sociale, une mission humaine. Quand il voit chaque soir ce peuple si intelligent et si avance, qui a fait de Paris la cite centrale du progres, s'entasser en foule devant un rideau que sa pensee a lui, ch_etif poete, va sou lever le moment d'apres, il sent combien il est peu de chose, lui, devant tant d'attente et de curiosite; il sent que, si son talent n'est rien, il faut que sa probite soit tout; il s 1nterroge avec severite et recueillement sur la portee phi los0phique de son oeuvre, car il se sait responsable, et-il ne veut pas que cette foule puisse lui demander compte un jour de ce qu'il lui aura enseigne. Le poete aussi a charge d'ames. Il ne faut pas que la multitude sorte du theatresans emporter avec elle quelque moralite austere et pro fonde. Aussi espere - t-il bien, Dieu aidant, ne developper jamais sur la scene (du moins tant que dureront les temps serieux ou nous sommes) que des choses pleines de lecons et de conseils. Il fera toujours apparaitre volontiers le cer cueil dans la salle du ban net, la priere des morts a tra vers les refrains de l'orgie, a cagoule a cote du masque. Ll laissera quelquefois le carnaval debraille chanter a tue tete sur l'avant-scene; mais il lui criera du fond du thea tre Memento quia pulvis es. Il sait bien que l'art seul, l'art pur, l'art proprement dit, n'exige pas tout cela du poete; mais il pense qu'au theatre surtout il ne suffit pas de remplir seulement les conditions de l'art. Et, quant aux plaies et aux miseres de l'humanite, toutes les fois qu'il les etalera dans le drame, il tachera de jeter surce que ces nudites - la auraient de trop odieux le voile d'une idee con solante et grave. Il ne mettra pas Marion de Lorme sur la scene sans purifier la courtisane avec un peu d'amour; il donnera Triboulet le difforme un coeur de pere; il don nera a Lucrece la monstrueuse des entrailles de mere. Et, de cette facon, sa conscience se reposera du moins tran quille el sereine sur son oeuvre. Le drame qu'il reve et qu'il tente de realiser pourra toucher a tout sans se souil ler a rien. Faites circuler dans tout une pensee morale et compatissante, et il n'y a plus rien de difforme ni de re poussant. A la chose la plus hideuse melez une idee reli gieuse, elle deviendra sainte et pure. Attachez Dieu au gi bet. Vous avez la croix.
