About the Book

When I talked to my mom several years ago, I had many questions. I was about 25 years old living in Anchorage, Alaska, where I had resided since I was 17. When I left Denver, Colorado, I didn't call home for about 7 years because I hurt inside so deeply. I had felt this pain as a child; feeling as if I may as well have been invisible. No one ever noticed me. I would hide away from all the drama in my home. One day I packed sandwiches and hid in my mother's closet for 3 days before I was missed. I used to tell myself all the time that I lived in a 'house of strangers' and no one noticed me except my grandmother. When she'd come over she would hold me tight in her arms and rock me, saying, "It's all right, baby. They don't have to love you. I love you." She'd come and get me and I would stay over her house and go to church with her. Only then I feel like I had a family. Perhaps she had her reasons too, but more than anything she could tell I was without a bond from my mother and father. My father was dating my auntie, my mother was always gone doing whatever, and our house was chaos and competition. My older sister saw my spirit dying without structure and love at about age 7 or 8 and she became a mother to me full time. In fact, she became a mother to the whole house. Mom was never there. My sister Paula cared for me when I felt like I didn't care if I lived or died. She noticed me and reassured me that I was important in the midst of an older brother that was like a god to our father and an overpowering little sister that never gave me any respect. My little sister always knew she was better than me and told me so often. They had relationships with Mom and Dad while I just disappeared into nothing. No one punished me for doing wrong in school. No one rewarded me for accomplishments either. I was just there, invisible.
